What happened to the "Edward M Kennedy Memorial Health Care Reform Bill"? No one uses the name. the best known name is ObamaCare. I have seen PelosiCare too. despite what the liberals call it, the House version remains an atrocity. It won't pas the senate, no one wants to go to jail over that. Plus the lawmakers have exempted themselves again from the very law they wish to create... I thought royalty of old was gone forever, guess not. .
What happened to the Senator Edward M. Kennedy Memorial Health Care Reform Bill? No one uses the name, maybe it's too long and the blowhards get their tongue twisted saying it. The best known name is ObamaCare. I have seen PelosiCare too, both are fitting. The House version remains an atrocity, it won't pass the senate. Lawmakers (in Pelosi's version) have again exempted themselves from the very law they wish to create, they refer that lawmakers may participate if they wish. The Patriot. You speak of "unfair". May I add the unfairness of these ObamaCare bills----> Lawmakers exempt themselves from the very law they wish to create. They also exempt their union friends. You speak of fair? Not hardly. . Sorry socialist liberals, I am not rolling this question to voting... trolls with multiple accounts and no morals (go figure) have indeed been voting multiple times.
What is the proper etiquette for a memorial service? A friend of mine's father passed last night and they are holding a memorial service for him on Sunday. The friend and I dated for quite a while more than a decade ago. We ARE friends, close friends and he called this morning to tell me (he's been keeping me up to date on his dads health for the past year). My question is, do I bring anything? What do I do? I'm at a loss as I have never attended a memorial service before, and he's has requested me being there with him. My husband is in full support, he wants me to go, and my friends live in insists I be there as well.
Limbaugh? Rather harsh comment re Ted Kennedy? A "Memorial" albeit Kennedy is still alive? humm Limbaugh phrased President Obama's health care revisions as a "Memorial to Ted Kennedy" ~~ as though Mr. Kennedy were dead. well then, perhaps we should re-phrase his thoughts about Mr. Kennedy and turn them around for Mr. Limbaugh ~~ because perhaps President Obama's proposed health care revision will be championed by a ~as Limbaugh phrased it ~ "before its all over, it'll be called the Ted Kennedy Memorial Health Care bill." But in that same respect, before it is all over, it can also be called: "the Russ Limbaugh Bill, a Living Memorial to the bowel movement of drug abuse, gone sour." What is good for he goose is good for the gander. what goes around comes around. Karma Mr.Limbaugh. Karma. oh please. I am one of the best writers in this forum. I am female; age 24; college educated; working on Masters; am well traveled; speak three different languages; have my own mind; do not embrace Any political affiliation at all because I do not need a label to define myself; realize that most posters here are older and pseudo knowledgeable about politics ~~~ but you see, I tell it like I see it, and hear it, etc. Russ is a leftover leftover who most young people laugh at. He spend most of his time talking about talking and scratching his underarms. The "spelling" of his name was done on purpose. I didn't want to actually call him a 'wuss' ~~ oops ~~ but now I did. Do you now see what it means when a person can take one thing and mean it as another.? Same with "Wuss" - I am smarter than you think, and my punctuation is just fine. What is Esther talking about. There's help for you ~~ grab it and stop complaining. And guess what silly?. We are in a Depression. get with the times!
What do you think about the banner flying over War Memorial during last week's Arkansas/ Chatanooga game? It read: "Nuttin' like being 0-2 in the SEC" An obvious dig against Coach Nutt by the fans. You think the Board of Trustees will finally start listening to the fans? They haven't kept their word about getting rid of their losing coach and Nutt hasn't kept his word about changing our program either. The fans are fed up. I think the banner, while negative, might finally get the results we need for the long term health of our program: To be rid of Coach Nutt/ Frank Broyles and the Arkansas good ol boy networking once and for all! BulldogBlitz, you must not know much about what is really going on at Arkansas if you don't think Nutt deserves to go. And BTW, we HAD more than one top recruit, but Nutt ran him off. You don't have to have BCS aspirations for THAT to piss you off. And BTW, who said anything about an NC? We just hate our coach. And it's not because we're ignorant. The ignorant ones are the ones still supporting that coach who has, not only had a majority of losing seasons in his 10 years at Arkansas, also nationally embarassed our athletic program last year. Stan Heath's offenses were FAR less and he got the boot! So what's wrong with a fan who loves their alma mater (who's not even from Arkansas BTW) holding their football coach to the same expectations as their basketball coach is being held to?
would it be ok to use the Rainbow Bridge poem at my husbands memorial? My husband is in Hospice of Dayton, he's been through a big battle with his health the past two months. He isn't expected to be among us much longer. He is a huge animal loving person, who has lost dear pets recently. I know the poem applies to pets, but it just seem fitting to apply it to him as well.
Did you see this ? Illegal Aliens forcing County and private hospital officials to close? County officials and executives from nine hospitals adversely affected by recent emergency room closures will make a plea for more money Thursday to a state commission that oversees Medi-Cal reimbursement rates. The nine private hospitals have been losing millions of dollars due to the influx of uninsured patients and those covered by Medi-Cal, which has the lowest reimbursement rate for services in the country. County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance has also been affected by the closure. "We don't have the luxury of failing," said Jim Lott, executive director of the Hospital Association of Southern California, a trade organization that is spearheading Thursday's meeting. "If we see even one of these hospitals close, it will have a dramatic ripple effect on the whole health system. It would make a horrible situation even worse." The August closure of the 48-bed emergency room at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital in Willowbrook was the tipping point of a long-simmering problem, Lott said. Four other hospitals or emergency rooms have closed in the last five years, forcing patients in some of the poorest areas near Hawthorne, Gardena and El Segundo into already-crowded hospitals that have had to absorb about 100,000 additional emergency room visits each year. Centinela Freeman Memorial Health System based in Inglewood, along with eight other private hospitals identified by the county, have suffered serious financial repercussions. Some are considering closing their emergency rooms as early as next year, officials say. http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/articles/10409257.html
Why do BIG PHARMA and BIG INSURANCE love the health care bill so much? They're all lining up to get her elected it seems!
Why do big pharma companies and insurance companies support the health care bill, libs? "Panicked Healthcare Lobbyists Descend On Massachusetts To Save The 60th Democratic Vote For Reform We've been following the special election in Massachusetts, where the GOP hopes to pull a surprise upset in the race to fill Ted Kennedy's seat. If they do pull it off, healthcare reform is instantly in trouble, as the Democrats drop below 60. But money is coming to the rescue of Democrat Martha Coakley -- healthcare industry lobbyist money, specifically. Tim Carney identifies several of her top fundraisers. Take a look at who they represent: * Thomas Boggs, Patton Boggs: Bristol-Myers Squibb * Chuck Brain, Capitol Hill Strategies: Amgen, BIO, Merck, PhRMA * Susan Brophy, Glover Park Group: Blue Cross, Pfizer * Steven Champlin, Duberstein Group: AHIP, Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis * Licy Do Canto, Raben Group: Amgen * Gerald Cassidy, Cassidy & Associates: U. Of course, this is how politics works. Lobbyists for various corporations and causes get involved wherever they can for candidates of both parties. But when you see all these big pharma (and insurance!) representatives coming with cash for a crucial vote, you know which side they're on." http://www.businessinsider.com/healthcare-lobbyists-descend-on-massachusetts-to-save-the-60th-vote-for-reform-2010-1 ArRo, they are last minute pushing the Democrat candidate in order for that Democrat to vote FOR the health care bill. Open your eyes. They want it to pass. Just like Obama is good buddies with Jeff Kindler from Pfizer. Corporatism at its best!!!
Obama wants a financial reform bill on his desk by Memorial Day, is that a good thing? I should also mention that Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are the guys who are working on the bill. Democrats blew deadline after deadline in the health care debate, and now some on Capitol Hill are bristling at the suggestion from the White House that a massive financial reform bill should be on the president’s desk by Memorial Day. How did Rush know back in March the Dems would do this? Back in March, the Democratic National Committee was indignant: "Today Rush Limbaugh yet again crossed the line saying: by the time the debate on President Obama's health care plan is over, 'it'll be called the Ted Kennedy Memorial Health Care bill.' It is outrageous to demonize a patriotic Senator who has spent his life fighting so that every person has the opportunity to live the American dream."
How can this be true? Do illegal aliens REALLY get better FREE health care than the US Military? Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas , Texas is a fairly famous institution and for a variety of reasons: 1. John F. Kennedy died there in 1963. 2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after. 3. Jack Ruby-who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died there a few years later..by coincidence. "On the flip side, Parkland is also home to the second busiest maternity ward in the country with almost 16,000 new babies arriving each year. (That's almost 44 per day---every day) A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the wo men who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants. That's 11,200 anchor babies born every year just in Dallas. According to the article, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies in 2004 but managed to end up with almost $8 million dollars in surplus funding. Medicaid kicked in $34.5 million, Dallas County taxpayers kicked in $31.3 million and the feds tossed in another $9.5 million. The average patient in Parkland 's maternity wards is 25 years old, married and giving birth to her second child. She is also an illegal immigrant. By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on heir immigration status or ability to pay. OK, fine. That doesn't mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital , they do. Parkland Memorial Hospital has nine prenatal clinics. NINE. The Dallas Morning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child---her previous two were also born at Parkland . Her first two deliveries were free and the Mexican native was grateful because it would have cost $200 to have them in Mexico This time, the hospital wants her to pay $10 per visit and $100 for the delivery but she was unsure if she could come up with the money. Not that it matters, the hospital won't turn her away. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.) How long has this been going on? What are the long-term affects? Well, another subject of the article was born at Parkland in 1986 shortly after her mother entered the U.S. illegally---now she is having her own child there as well. (That's right, she's technically a U.S. citizen.) These women receive free prenatal care including medication, nutrition, birthing classes and child care classes. They also get freebies such as car seats, bottles, diapers and formula. Most of these things are available to American citizens as well but only for low-income applicants and even then, the red tape involved is almost insurmountable. Because these women are illegal immigrants, they do not have to provide any sort of legitimate identification---no proof of income. An American citizen would have to provide a social security number which would reveal their annual income---an illegal immigrant need only claim to be poor and the hospital must take them at their word. "My husband is a pilot for the United States Navy (yes, he fought in Iraq ) and while the health care is good, we Navy wives don't get any of these perks!" Car seats? Diapers? Not so much. So my question is this: Does our public medical care system treat illegal immigrants better than American citizens? Yes it does! As I mentioned, the care I have received is perfectly adequate but it's bare bones, meat and potato medical care---not top of line. Their (the illegals) medical care is free---simply because they are il legal immigrants? Once again, there is no way to verify their income. Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County residents who earn less than $40,000 per year. (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job. Yeah, the 'free' care is not so easy for Americans.) There are about 140 patients who received roughly $4 million dollars for un-reimbursed medical care. As it turns out, they did not qualify for free treatment because they resided outside of Dallas County So the hospital is going to sue them! Illegals get it all free! But U.S citizens who live outside of Dallas County get sued! How stupid is this? As if that isn't annoying enough, the illegal immigrant patients are actually complaining about hospital staff not speaking Spanish. In this AP story, the author speaks with a woman who is upset that she had to translate comments from the hospital staff into Spanish for her husband. The doctor was trying to explain the situation to the family and the mother was forced to translate for her husband who only spoke Spanish. This was apparently a great injustice to her. In an attempt to create a Spanish-speaking staff, Parkland Hospital is now providing incentives in the form of extra pay for applicants who speak Spanish. Additionally, medical students at the University of Texas Southwestern for which Parkland Hospital is the training facility will now have a Spanish language requirement added to their already jammed-packed curriculum. No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multicultural) req uirement. In the meantime, I have to end my column here. I have to go buy a car seat." (Ed: Sorry for the length, but this needs wide circulation----particularly to our "employees" in Congress.) PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERY US CITIZEN YOU KNOW. If you want to verify accuracy: http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/parkland.asp I received this incredible email, but it seems like it would be impossible for it to be true, but check out snopes link. I do NOT hate immigrants. In fact, I love them, but they are so much easier to love back in their own country! I would like to go visit their country and meet them THERE.
What do hospital HR people look for? I am going to be applying soon to Lee County Memorial Health System in Cape Coral, Florida. The problem is I live in PA, and I am not able to move until June but I really want to work there. What would anyone recommend for me to write in my resume, cover letter etc. as far as what hospitals look for in potential employees. I am also getting a letter of recommendation from the head of finance at the hospital where I live. THANKS!
Do you think McCain veep meeting is a distracting from his pending release of his health reports? There's a new theory about McCain's (leaked) plan to meet with three possible vice-presidents this weekend at his home in Arizona: He also plans to release health records this weekend, which are a big issue because he's 72, his age is a concern to many voters, he had a cancerous melanoma removed in 2000, his swollen cheek is a constant reminder of the surgery, and another old senator -- Ted Kennedy -- was just, out of nowhere, diagnosed with a brain tumor. So, he's releasing the health records on Memorial Day weekend, when most Americans won't be paying attention. And now, he also plans to meet with three (much, much younger) vice presidential prospects, to hopefully dominate coverage for those who are paying attention.
Are there many health career opportunities in the U.S. military? I'm so interested in health and nutrition and I would love it if my career was able to benefit our military and troops in some way. Are there a good amount of health/nutrition jobs in the military (also considering this economy)? Thank you!! Happy Memorial Day! <3
Should all medical facilities ask for documentation? Is this a good way to stop illegals from getting free medical? Is it not ridiculous to spend $1.5 million dollars on the care of some illegal? Stuart clinic cuts free services for illegals! Stuart clinic cuts free services for illegal immigrants, will require documentation By Hillary Copsey Saturday, October 4, 2008 Volunteers In Medicine free clinic stopped accepting illegal immigrant patients in September because Martin Memorial officials say the health system no longer can afford to provide medical tests for them. Martin Memorial Health Systems provides diagnostic services and therapy — everything from blood analysis to body scans — for the Volunteers In Medicine clinic, which provides free care for impoverished, uninsured Martin County residents. Last year, Martin Memorial did $2.3 million in work for the clinic's 1,000 patients. "We have worked closely with Volunteers In Medicine," Martin Memorial spokesman Scott Samples said. "We both agree that neither of us has the financial resources to continue providing care for undocumented immigrants." Martin Memorial provided $26.4 million in charity care last year. Insurance reimbursements are falling, and the ranks of un- or under-insured patients are growing. The health system is choosing to focus on caring for legal residents, Samples said. Providing long-term care for uninsured patients unable to pay their bills never has been a policy at Martin Memorial, Samples said. But the hospital does provide emergency care to anyone. In at least one case — Luis Alberto Jimenez, an illegal immigrant who called Martin Memorial home for years, at a cost of $1.5 million — emergency care turned into long-term care because the patient had nowhere else to go. That case was rare, Samples said, but does illustrate the larger problem health-care facilities across the country are struggling with — how to treat patients who are in the country illegally. Since September, Volunteers in Medicine is only treating the 100 undocumented patients already enrolled in their program. Volunteers In Medicine's $550,000 annual budget can't pay the bills Martin Memorial used to, Executive Director Mary Fields said. Without those tests, doctors can't really treat a patient. "It's very difficult to tell a doctor to look at a chart different for one patient than for another," Fields said. "To tell someone, 'You can get this, but not that.' That's really hard. You can't do that to someone." Since the new policy went into effect Sept. 12, Volunteers In Medicine still has a month-and-a-half-long waiting list for patient enrollment. All new patients will have to show proof of citizenship or legal immigration status along with meeting the income, insurance and Martin County residency requirements. The clinic's medical director, Dr. Howard Voss, said he sympathizes both with patients and Martin Memorial. Word has gotten out among immigrants — even those still in their native countries — that Martin Memorial is a place to get care, Voss said, and the health system can't absorb the cost forever. "This hospital cannot be the acute care center for a whole nation of Mexicans or Guatemalans," Voss said.

Why is Obama resorting to scaring people into supporting his Socialistic government run health care plan? Democrat Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida has found his calling: Death demagogue. First, he accused Republicans of wanting sick patients to “DIE QUICKLY.” Next, he likened health insurance problems to a “Holocaust in America.” Now, he’s unveiled a new website entitled “namesofthedead.com” in memory of the “more than 44,000 Americans [who] die simply because they have no health insurance.” Just one problem: The statistic is a phantom number. Grayson’s memorial, like the Democrats’ government health care takeover plan itself, is full of vapor. It comes from a study published last December in the American Journal of Public Health. But the science is infused with left-wing politics. Two of the co-authors, Drs. David Himmelstein and Steffie Woolhandler, are avowed government-run health care activists. Himmelstein co-founded Physicians for a National Health Program, which bills itself as the “the only national physician organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to implementing a single-payer national health program.” Woolhandler is a co-founder and served as secretary of the group.
What happens when water is in your ear for a long time? I have had water in my middle ear since before memorial day. I have trouble hearing things on that side or mix up words when people talk. It doesn't hurt but it is very annoying. My dad lost his job and his new one doesn't give health insurance, also the new one is ending this friday so I can't go to the doc until my sports physical in a couple weeks. I really hate not being able to hear and having that feeling in my ear. Is there anything I can do?
Will I still be able to make alot of money if I become a doctor? In my lifetime will I be paid as much, or will doctors not be paid as much if nationalized health care goes through? My dad is a pediatric nuero-oncologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering hospital and makes $900,000 a year, will I be able to make this much ten years from now?
Does the Mojave Cross case show that people have no respect for the law? Not 2 weeks from when the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the religious symbol to remain on federal land someone up and steals it. It had no real value (scrap metal only), it has stood there for years and is a memorial for war dead Is this how people deal with defeat in court? Just ignore it and commit a crime to win? If the Health care law is overturned will people burn, riot and steal? Is this a nation of laws or anarchy?
Is Rush Limbaugh An Evil Man? On his radio show today, Rush Limbaugh joked about wanting Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) dead. Kennedy who recently discovered he had a brain tumor and who's going to honored by the Queen of England soon, was the victim of Rush Limbaugh's hatred. Rush Limbaugh suggested that Kennedy would be dead by the time health care reform legislation passes. "Before it's all over, it'll be called the Ted Kennedy memorial health care bill," Is this just cruel?
Kurt Cobain memorial/ Leland Cobain? it seems like a read something about Kurt's grandfather, Leland wanting to raise money for a memorial for Kurt. is this true? also, has anyone written to Leland before? i hear he likes to write letters to Kurts fans. also (again) has anyone heard about leland's recent health? i know back in 2008 it wasn't at the best X
How is the life of a medical resident? I am a high school junior in Bangladesh but me and my family are immigrating to the USA this summer. I will apply to college in 2008. Although I have no definite idea on what career I want to follow, I intend on majoring in Biology or Biochemistry and might apply to medical school later on. Recently I was watching a program on CNN about the life medical residents at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. I was appalled: the residents work 30-hour shifts, coming in one morning and leaving the next afternoon. It put a lot of doubt in my mind about my motivation to be a physician; I do not think I could bear the stresses of a job that demands 30-hour shifts and 100+ hours a week. I want to ask, do all physicians have to go through such rigorous schedules as residents, or are residencies in certain specialities, e.g. General Practitioner less stressful? And must all residencies be completed in hospital settings or are residencies also performed in primary-health clinics or doctors’ chambers.
Memorial plans...non-believers? This question arose out of someone elses question stating that atheist would use a priest for thier memorial service. Some of the answers cracked me up and so I thought I would post this question. Me I dont really care what happens to my body. For health code reasons I suppose I should be creamated and tossed in a river or something. (actually wouldnt it be great to be made into a fine tea). As far as the service I want everyone to get drunk and try to remember one good thing about me! Death is looked upon too much as something sad. What a drag. So do you want a spiritual memorial or what do you have planned?
I am having a really hard time. Help. Memorial for baby? Here is my friend. She needs some help, Please help her. Hello, I am having a really hard time. My baby's memorial service will be this Thursday. I don't want to get into too much detail on the circumstances, but my baby passed due to an abortion at 8 weeks. I've already been living a life of pain, sorrow, regret, anger, depression and so on, so please no nasty comments. Not to be rude, but no one knows my story. And I am not validating my choice. I miss my baby terribly, and never wanted an abortion. I have been trying to make a video, but its not turning out too well. I am just not sure on what pictures to use, and or what to write. I was trying to tell my story along with my apologies to my baby in the video. You know, to memorialize him or her. I want to do something really special. I want to honor my baby. I want to let him or her know how sorry I am, and how even though I made a wrong choice, how much they meant and mean to me, as I love him or her. I don't have any memories from that time in my life. Not anything physical I can hold onto. The pregnancy test was thrown out by the father. I have nothing. I do have a picture I believe was taken of me when I was pregnant, but I can't remember the exact date it was taken. All I have is the memory of my baby being with me, and one time I remember while I was in the tub, I grabbed the bar of soap and started to gently wash my stomach. I remember I was so sad, and I wanted nothing more than to care for my baby. I even remember sitting in slightly cooler water, as I was afraid of sitting in too hot of water. I remember just sitting there, staring at my stomach, looking at my belly button and being so sad. I also stopped taking all meds when I found out about the pregnancy. I was on meds for mental health issues. And I abruptly stopped everything cold turkey. I do admit, I was not in the right state of mind, and I was in no place to make a decision, but my free will was taken from me. I felt like I had no voice, and I wasn't strong enough to do anything about my weaknesses. I remember just being alone. Please help me. What can I do? My baby is gone, and I am dying inside. I want something so very special for him or her. I have asked god to reveal what my baby was, and I don't feel I have received an answer. I want so badly to know. I think it may help in putting my special dedication memorial together. I know I made a mistake, and a much as I want to undo it, I can't. Please anyone out there, what can I do? I am open to any ideas. Thank you...

How can it be falsely imprisoned Illegal could be awarded punitive damages in Martin Memorial case? STUART — A judge Monday ruled that if a jury finds Martin Memorial Medical Center falsely imprisoned an illegal immigrant in 2003 by repatriating the brain-damaged man to his native Guatemala, it may consider awarding punitive damages against the hospital. After hearing from attorneys representing Martin Memorial and former patient Luis Jimenez and his Indiantown guardian, Montejo Gaspar Montejo, Senior Circuit Judge James Midelis ruled there was a sufficient factual basis for the lawyers to assert a claim for punitive damages, generally awarded to punish an offending party. “I may be addressing that after I’ve heard the evidence to see if that’s still the case,” Midelis announced. But the anticipated three-week trial, slated to begin Tuesday, was put off until Monday after attorneys for Montejo said he was in Guatemala attending a family funeral and would be unable to attend jury selection. Midelis determined that if a jury was empaneled without the plaintiff Montejo being present, it could amount to reversible error, which could force a retrial upon appeal. Martin Memorial is being sued for a claim of false imprisonment related to their decision to deport Jimenez July 10, 2003, following two years of medical care for a traumatic brain injury, costing the nonprofit hospital about $1.5 million. About 125 prospective jurors are expected to be questioned beginning Monday, followed by a second group of 100 on Tuesday. Posted by Tiger8221 on June 23, 2009 at 10:22 a.m. (Suggest removal) I really don't understand how they can say the hospital "imprisoned" him. The hospital took care of him for 2 years without ever receiving a penny for his health care. Why should legal American citizens be responsible for paying for the illegals who come here and take advantage of everything. This is part of what is wrong with this country's border patrol guidelines. I do feel bad for what has happened to him, but what would have happened if it were him who caused the accident and killed or seriously injured a child? Would he be getting sued right now? Would the family ever have any hope of recouping their money? Would he be in jail? Probably not. He would have gone back to his native country. He nor his family have put out any money to pay for this $1.5 million bill. I don't think it was the hospital's fault he got into an accident. Maybe if he weren't illegaly driving a vehicle, it wouldn't have happened. If the jury/judge wants to award him the money, fine. Make it payable to the hospital since that's who he owes for his medical care. http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2009/jun/22/jury-may-award-punitive-damages-if-martin-loses/?feedback=1#comments
Can someone suggest where I can get a pet memorial.? My beloved cat died a few days ago. I want to get a memorial to put in my back yard where I can put her name and my other cats name. I am looking for something with a cat on it. Any ideas where i can look. I am still coping with this. I have daily crying outbreaks. I started a group for pet obituaries so I could memorialize her online. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/petobituaries/ It felt really good to write about her even if no one else reads it.

what is wrong with the health care in mon county west va? What’s wrong with this picture? On June 19, 2005, the Board of Directors of Monongalia Health System approved proceeding with the Detailed Design Development stage of the hospital's Master Facility Plan. This approval put Mon General Hospital on target to begin site preparation this fall for its $82 million expansion and renovation project. Since then many people like myself has entered Monongalia Generals doors without any insurance or health care . I entered for chest pains and initially had, approximately $16000.00 worth of medical bills . Later on that year I suffered from migraines and another $ 1600.00 in bills were occurred. I went thru Monongalia Generals steps for medical assistance which was losing a days work to go into the Health department where upon entry I was immediately deigned any assistance due to income level was too high. I then took the denial letter in to Monongalia general to be able to fill out their application upon doing so I was rejected due to my income level . So here I am deeply indebted to Monongalia General and wanting to set up a payment plan . They state is there any way you can get a loan or pay the whole amount then we can give you the insurance rate. By now, being new to this I am confused and scratching my head insurance rate, my rate , what’s the difference. I find out but am still confused. So then they ask me to pay $ 150.00 per month , and are very persistent about it . Till this day I pay what I can I make my payment it might be $100 .00 one month it might be ten the next . I suffer from migraines still but have now started to seek treatment from Ruby memorial hospital whom by the way has accepted me fully into their charity care program under the same income which I am not eligible for anything from Monongalia General Hospital . So I ask what is wrong with this picture. They spend 82 million to renovate their facility but they want to rake each and every person over the coals to earn the money to pay for the upgrades or is it they are to busy upgrading to help the taxpayers whom are actually helping to renovate their facility or what .I am just confused about the practices of this Hospital shouldn’t we all be. SINCERELY YOURS A CONCERNED CITIZEN
Why did Hillary lie about a health care horror involving an uninsured pregnant woman? Over the last five weeks, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has featured in her campaign stump speeches the story of a health care horror: an uninsured pregnant woman who lost her baby and died herself after being denied care by an Ohio hospital because she could not come up with a $100 fee. The woman, Trina Bachtel, did die last August, two weeks after her baby boy was stillborn at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio. But hospital administrators said Friday that Ms. Bachtel was under the care of an obstetrics practice affiliated with the hospital, that she was never refused treatment and that she was, in fact, insured.[...] There is no end to Hillary's lies... Old or not, it shows a pattern of a dishonest woman who wants to be our Next President... There will be Blood ...... Thats right Amanda: Push aside Hillary's lie and focus on the real issue. Not the fact this LIAR wants to become our President. Nooo..thats not important..
Do U.S. Citizens need to become illegal immigrants to have FREE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE? Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas is a fairly famous institution and for a variety of reasons: 1. John F. Kennedy died there in 1963 2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after 3. Jack Ruby-who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died there a few years later..by coincidence 'On the flip side, Parkland is also home to the second busiest maternity ward in the country with almost 16,000 new babies arriving each year. (That's almost 44 per day every day) A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in three months were illegal immigrants. That's 11,200 anchor babies born every year just in Dallas According to the article, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies but managed to end up with almost $8 million dollars in surplus funding. By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on their immigration status or ability to pay. OK, fine. That doesn't mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital, they do. ' Parkland Memorial Hospital has nine prenatal clinics'. That's right !!! NINE. The Dallas Morning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child, her previous two were also born at Parkland. Her first two deliveries were free and the Mexican native was grateful because it would have cost $200 to have them in Mexico. This time, the hospital wants her to pay $10 per visit and $100 for the delivery but she was unsure if she could come up with the money. Not that it matters, the hospital won't turn her away. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.) 'How long has this been going on? What are the long-term affects? Well, another subject of the article was born at Parkland in 1986 shortly after her mother entered the US illegally - now she is having her own child there as well. (That's right, she's technically a US citizen.) These women receive free prenatal care including medication, nutrition, birthing classes and child care classes. They also get freebies such as car seats, bottles, diapers and formula. Most of these things are available to American citizens as well but only for low-income applicants and even then, the red tape involved is almost insurmountable.. Because these women are illegal immigrants, they do not have to provide any sort of legitimate identification - no proof of income. An American cit izen would have to provide a social security number which would reveal their annual income - an illegal immigrant need only claim to be poor and the hospital must take them at their word. But U. S citizens who live outside of Dallas County get s ued! No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multi-cultural) requirement. (Sorry for the length, but this needs wide circulation particularly to our 'employees' in Congress.) Remember that this is only ONE hospital is Dallas, Texas. There are many more hospitals across our country that also have to deal with this.

DID YOU SEE Police Officer To Be Charged After Killing Motorist While Racing To Safe Driving Campaign ? STATESBORO, GEORGIA - A father was seriously injured and his son was killed Tuesday when a rental trailer they were towing was rear-ended on Interstate 16 by a police officer who specializes in nabbing aggressive drivers and who was en route to Chatham County to take part in a safe-driving campaign, officials said. Cpl. Robert Balkcom, an assistant commander of the Georgia State Patrol post in Statesboro, said no charges have been filed yet, but they are likely, against Dougherty County Police Officer Jeremiah Fenn, 25, of Albany. Officer Fenn was headed to Chatham County to take part in Operation Rolling Thunder, a 90-day effort to curb Savannah’s rising traffic fatality rate with the help of scores of officers from around the state. Officer Fenn was driving eastbound near Metter when he took his eyes off the road for a second to look at the computer mounted in his car and struck a trailer being towed by an SUV traveling in the same direction and in the same lane, Cpl. Balkcom said. The video camera in Officer Fenn’s car, which could have recorded the accident, was turned off, Cpl. Balkcom said. The SUV overturned several times, ejecting Milton Wilcox, 33, of Savannah, a passenger who was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Mr. Wilcox was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, William Wilcox, 57, of Savannah, the driver, was airlifted to Savannah’s Memorial Health University Medical Center with serious injuries, Cpl. Balkcom said. A two-mile eastbound stretch of the interstate was closed for about six hours while members of the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team investigated the accident, Cpl. Balkcom said. Witnesses told authorities that Officer Fenn’s police car was “traveling at a high rate of speed,” an issue that will be addressed by the investigation, Cpl. Balkcom said. “There will more than likely be charges,” he said. Officer Fenn is a participant in a statewide program known as Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.), a collaborative effort of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and eight local law enforcement agencies to nab aggressive drivers.
Do you have to refrigerate cooked baked potatoes? I am going camping for the Memorial Day Weekend and want to make Baked Potatoes on the grill. Is there a way to bake them at home first, then just put them on the grill to heat the next day without refrigeration? Not enough room in the coolers. I want to save time, but not at the expense of flavor, or risk of health! PS I know it's not technically a "Baked Potato" if it's Grilled ..LOL
Do you believe America is suppose offer a life time of free medical care to Illegal immigrant's already 1.5 mi? Do you believe America is suppose offer a life time of free medical care to Illegal immigrant's already 1.5 million has been given why does this family feel we have an obligation to furnish a life time of free care ? Do you think the real motive here is family wanting money ?STUART — A jury being seated this week will be asked to determine whether Martin Memorial Medical Center should be held liable for a claim of false imprisonment for the way they repatriated a brain-damaged and penniless illegal immigrant back to his native Guatemala in 2003. How the hospital conducted itself during the extradition will be key to the deliberations of jurors in the expected three-week trial, pitting attorneys for Luis Jimenez, 38, and his Indiantown guardian, Montejo Gaspar Montejo, against Martin Memorial. On July 10, 2003, the hospital hired a jet to fly Jimenez out of the country after receiving a court order permitting his return to Guatemala, which an appeals court later determined exceeded the court’s jurisdiction. Since then, Jimenez’s lawyers, including Jack Scarola of West Palm Beach, have accused hospital executives of plotting a “clandestine deportation” in order to take advantage of a narrow window of time between a favorable court ruling and an expected appeal. “I went to law school to try this kind of case,” Scarola said during a recent interview. In court papers, he’s argued the hospital should be liable for money damages — including punitive damages — in part because Martin Memorial officials knew the move amounted to a federal deportation and was beyond the scope of state court, to which they’d turned for help in discharging Jimenez. The former gardener lived at Martin Memorial for two years, racking up $1.5 million in unpaid medical bills following a devastating car crash in 2000 caused by a drunken driver in a stolen van. The collision killed two people and left the now childlike Jimenez comatose with broken bones, a traumatic brain injury and the inability to use his legs. An invalid now cared for by his 73-year-old mother in his boyhood home atop a remote Guatemalan mountain, Jimenez is not expected to attend the trial with Montejo, his cousin by marriage. Hospital attorneys have staunchly defended using a private air ambulance to transfer Jimenez to a rehabilitation center in Guatemala City. In court papers, they note that not only could Martin Memorial — an acute care facility — not provide the extensive and ongoing therapy he required, but no American medical facility would accept him due to his illegal immigrant status. In a prepared statement, Ronda Wilburn, director of marketing communication for Martin Memorial Health Systems, said the burden of paying the health care bill for many undocumented immigrants “is falling on hospitals and health systems that simply cannot afford to pay it.” “We feel it is crucial for government leaders at the state and local levels to step in and work to solve this issue,” Wilburn noted. Martin Memorial attorney Scott Michaud, of Boca Raton, said it’s an important case for the hospital. “We are not trying to prove a point or set some kind of precedent,” Michaud said. “We are simply trying to establish that what we did, we did in good faith, and we think was reasonable and the plaintiffs have a different view.” In a legal pitch to award punitive damages against the hospital, attorney Scarola has argued that as a recipient of federal funds, Martin Memorial “was legally obligated to provide Mr. Jimenez with appropriate medical care, notwithstanding the fact that (he) was unable to pay for such services.” Scarola has argued that despite proof officials offered in court detailing the care Jimenez would receive in Guatemala, testimony showed the country’s health system was ill-equipped to deal with his medical needs and would result in his discharge “out on the streets within days of arriving in Guatemala.” Jimenez’s advocates say after a brief stay, he was discharged because he had no money. Michaud though, countered that Martin Memorial was assured by Guatemalan officials Jimenez would get the necessary medical help. When Martin Memorial discharged Jimenez, Michaud argued in court papers, it did so “with the honest belief based on the evidence it uncovered, the hospital in Guatemala was properly equipped to care for him.”http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2009/jun/20/illegal-immigrants-lawsuit-against-martin-memorial/ Could it be Guatemala does not want to offer free medical care for life ?

Is it good to drink milk? The text is too long but worthwhile read....? "MILK" Just the word itself sounds comforting! "How about a nice cup of hot milk?" The last time you heard that question it was from someone who cared for you--and you appreciated their effort. The entire matter of food and especially that of milk is surrounded with emotional and cultural importance. Milk was our very first food. If we were fortunate it was our mother's milk. A loving link, given and taken. It was the only path to survival. If not mother's milk it was cow's milk or soy milk "formula"--rarely it was goat, camel or water buffalo milk. Now, we are a nation of milk drinkers. Nearly all of us. Infants, the young, adolescents, adults and even the aged. We drink dozens or even several hundred gallons a year and add to that many pounds of "dairy products" such as cheese, butter, and yogurt. Can there be anything wrong with this? We see reassuring images of healthy, beautiful people on our television screens and hear messages that assure us that, "Milk is good for your body." Our dieticians insist that: "You've got to have milk, or where will you get your calcium?" School lunches always include milk and nearly every hospital meal will have milk added. And if that isn't enough, our nutritionists told us for years that dairy products make up an "essential food group." Industry spokesmen made sure that colourful charts proclaiming the necessity of milk and other essential nutrients were made available at no cost for schools. Cow's milk became "normal." You may be surprised to learn that most of the human beings that live on planet Earth today do not drink or use cow's milk. Further, most of them can't drink milk because it makes them ill. There are students of human nutrition who are not supportive of milk use for adults. Here is a quotation from the March/April 1991 Utne Reader: If you really want to play it safe, you may decide to join the growing number of Americans who are eliminating dairy products from their diets altogether. Although this sounds radical to those of us weaned on milk and the five basic food groups, it is eminently viable. Indeed, of all the mammals, only humans--and then only a minority, principally Caucasians--continue to drink milk beyond babyhood. Who is right? Why the confusion? Where best to get our answers? Can we trust milk industry spokesmen? Can you trust any industry spokesmen? Are nutritionists up to date or are they simply repeating what their professors learned years ago? What about the new voices urging caution? I believe that there are three reliable sources of information. The first, and probably the best, is a study of nature. The second is to study the history of our own species. Finally we need to look at the world's scientific literature on the subject of milk. Let's look at the scientific literature first. From 1988 to 1993 there were over 2,700 articles dealing with milk recorded in the 'Medicine' archives. Fifteen hundred of theses had milk as the main focus of the article. There is no lack of scientific information on this subject. I reviewed over 500 of the 1,500 articles, discarding articles that dealt exclusively with animals, esoteric research and inconclusive studies. How would I summarize the articles? They were only slightly less than horrifying. First of all, none of the authors spoke of cow's milk as an excellent food, free of side effects and the 'perfect food' as we have been led to believe by the industry. The main focus of the published reports seems to be on intestinal colic, intestinal irritation, intestinal bleeding, anemia, allergic reactions in infants and children as well as infections such as salmonella. More ominous is the fear of viral infection with bovine leukemia virus or an AIDS-like virus as well as concern for childhood diabetes. Contamination of milk by blood and white (pus) cells as well as a variety of chemicals and insecticides was also discussed. Among children the problems were allergy, ear and tonsillar infections, bedwetting, asthma, intestinal bleeding, colic and childhood diabetes. In adults the problems seemed centered more around heart disease and arthritis, allergy, sinusitis, and the more serious questions of leukemia, lymphoma and cancer. I think that an answer can also be found in a consideration of what occurs in nature & what happens with free living mammals and what happens with human groups living in close to a natural state as 'hunter-gatherers'. Our paleolithic ancestors are another crucial and interesting group to study. Here we are limited to speculation and indirect evidences, but the bony remains available for our study are remarkable. There is no doubt whatever that these skeletal remains reflect great strength, muscularity (the size of the muscular insertions show this), and total absence of advanced osteoporosis. And if you feel that these people are not important for us to study, consider that today our genes are programming our bodies in almost exactly the same way as our ancestors of 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. WHAT IS MILK? Milk is a maternal lactating secretion, a short term nutrient for new-borns. Nothing more, nothing less. Invariably, the mother of any mammal will provide her milk for a short period of time immediately after birth. When the time comes for 'weaning', the young offspring is introduced to the proper food for that species of mammal. A familiar example is that of a puppy. The mother nurses the pup for just a few weeks and then rejects the young animal and teaches it to eat solid food. Nursing is provided by nature only for the very youngest of mammals. Of course, it is not possible for animals living in a natural state to continue with the drinking of milk after weaning. IS ALL MILK THE SAME? Then there is the matter of where we get our milk. We have settled on the cow because of its docile nature, its size, and its abundant milk supply. Somehow this choice seems 'normal' and blessed by nature, our culture, and our customs. But is it natural? Is it wise to drink the milk of another species of mammal? Consider for a moment, if it was possible, to drink the milk of a mammal other than a cow, let's say a rat. Or perhaps the milk of a dog would be more to your liking. Possibly some horse milk or cat milk. Do you get the idea? Well, I'm not serious about this, except to suggest that human milk is for human infants, dogs' milk is for pups, cows' milk is for calves, cats' milk is for kittens, and so forth. Clearly, this is the way nature intends it. Just use your own good judgement on this one. Milk is not just milk. The milk of every species of mammal is unique and specifically tailored to the requirements of that animal. For example, cows' milk is very much richer in protein than human milk. Three to four times as much. It has five to seven times the mineral content. However, it is markedly deficient in essential fatty acids when compared to human mothers' milk. Mothers' milk has six to ten times as much of the essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. (Incidentally, skimmed cow's milk has no linoleic acid). It simply is not designed for humans. Food is not just food, and milk is not just milk. It is not only the proper amount of food but the proper qualitative composition that is critical for the very best in health and growth. Biochemists and physiologists -and rarely medical doctors - are gradually learning that foods contain the crucial elements that allow a particular species to develop its unique specializations. Clearly, our specialization is for advanced neurological development and delicate neuromuscular control. We do not have much need of massive skeletal growth or huge muscle groups as does a calf. Think of the difference between the demands make on the human hand and the demands on a cow's hoof. Human new-borns specifically need critical material for their brains, spinal cord and nerves. Can mother's milk increase intelligence? It seems that it can. In a remarkable study published in Lancet during 1992 (Vol. 339, p. 261-4), a group of British workers randomly placed premature infants into two groups. One group received a proper formula, the other group received human breast milk. Both fluids were given by stomach tube. These children were followed up for over 10 years. In intelligence testing, the human milk children averaged 10 IQ points higher! Well, why not? Why wouldn't the correct building blocks for the rapidly maturing and growing brain have a positive effect? In the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1982) Ralph Holman described an infant who developed profound neurological disease while being nourished by intravenous fluids only. The fluids used contained only linoleic acid - just one of the essential fatty acids. When the other, alpha linoleic acid, was added to the intravenous fluids the neurological disorders cleared. In the same journal five years later Bjerve, Mostad and Thoresen, working in Norway found exactly the same problem in adult patients on long term gastric tube feeding. In 1930 Dr. G.O. Burr in Minnesota working with rats found that linoleic acid deficiencies created a deficiency syndrome. Why is this mentioned? In the early 1960s pediatricians found skin lesions in children fed formulas without the same linoleic acid. Remembering the research, the addition of the acid to the formula cured the problem. Essential fatty acids are just that and cows' milk is markedly deficient in these when compared to human milk. WELL, AT LEAST COW'S MILK IS PURE Or is it? Fifty years ago an average cow produced 2,000 pounds of milk per year. Today the top producers give 50,000 pounds! How was this accomplished? Drugs, antibiotics, hormones, forced feeding plans and specialized breeding; that's how. The latest high-tech onslaught on the poor cow is bovine growth hormone or BGH. This genetically engineered drug is supposed to stimulate milk production but, according to Monsanto, the hormone's manufacturer, does not affect the milk or meat. There are three other manufacturers: Upjohn, Eli Lilly, and American Cyanamid Company. Obviously, there have been no long-term studies on the hormone's effect on the humans drinking the milk. Other countries have banned BGH because of safety concerns. One of the problems with adding molecules to a milk cows' body is that the molecules usually come out in the milk. I don't know how you feel, but I don't want to experiment with the ingestion of a growth hormone. A related problem is that it causes a marked increase (50 to 70 per cent) in mastitis. This, then, requires antibiotic therapy, and the residues of the antibiotics appear in the milk. It seems that the public is uneasy about this product and in one survey 43 per cent felt that growth hormone treated milk represented a health risk. A vice president for public policy at Monsanto was opposed to labelling for that reason, and because the labelling would create an 'artificial distinction'. The country is awash with milk as it is, we produce more milk than we can consume. Let's not create storage costs and further taxpayer burdens, because the law requires the USDA to buy any surplus of butter, cheese, or non-fat dry milk at a support price set by Congress! In fiscal 1991, the USDA spent $757 million on surplus butter, and one billion dollars a year on average for price supports during the 1980s (Consumer Reports, May 1992: 330-32). Any lactating mammal excretes toxins through her milk. This includes antibiotics, pesticides, chemicals and hormones. Also, all cows' milk contains blood! The inspectors are simply asked to keep it under certain limits. You may be horrified to learn that the USDA allows milk to contain from one to one and a half million white blood cells per millilitre. (That's only 1/30 of an ounce). If you don't already know this, I'm sorry to tell you that another way to describe white cells where they don't belong would be to call them pus cells. To get to the point, is milk pure or is it a chemical, biological, and bacterial cocktail? Finally, will the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) protect you? The United States General Accounting Office (GAO) tells us that the FDA and the individual States are failing to protect the public from drug residues in milk. Authorities test for only 4 of the 82 drugs in dairy cows. As you can imagine, the Milk Industry Foundation's spokesman claims it's perfectly safe. Jerome Kozak says, "I still think that milk is the safest product we have." Other, perhaps less biased observers, have found the following: 38% of milk samples in 10 cities were contaminated with sulfa drugs or other antibiotics. (This from the Centre for Science in the Public Interest and The Wall Street Journal, Dec. 29, 1989).. A similar study in Washington, DC found a 20 percent contamination rate (Nutrition Action Healthletter, April 1990). What's going on here? When the FDA tested milk, they found few problems. However, they used very lax standards. When they used the same criteria, the FDA data showed 51 percent of the milk samples showed drug traces. Let's focus in on this because it’s critical to our understanding of the apparent discrepancies. The FDA uses a disk-assay method that can detect only 2 of the 30 or so drugs found in milk. Also, the test detects only at the relatively high level. A more powerful test called the 'Charm II test' can detect drugs down to 5 parts per billion. One nasty subject must be discussed. It seems that cows are forever getting infections around the udder that require ointments and antibiotics. An article from France tells us that when a cow receives penicillin, that penicillin appears in the milk for from 4 to 7 milkings. Another study from the University of Nevada, Reno tells of cells in 'mastic milk', milk from cows with infected udders. An elaborate analysis of the cell fragments, employing cell cultures, flow cytometric analysis , and a great deal of high tech stuff. Do you know what the conclusion was? If the cow has mastitis, there is pus in the milk. Sorry, it’s in the study, all concealed with language such as "macrophages containing many vacuoles and phagocytosed particles," etc. IT GETS WORSE Well, at least human mothers' milk is pure! Sorry. A huge study showed that human breast milk in over 14,000 women had contamination by pesticides! Further, it seems that the sources of the pesticides are meat and--you guessed it-- dairy products. Well, why not? These pesticides are concentrated in fat and that's what's in these products. (Of interest, a subgroup of lactating vegetarian mothers had only half the levels of contamination). A recent report showed an increased concentration of pesticides in the breast tissue of women with breast cancer when compared to the tissue of women with fibrocystic disease. Other articles in the standard medical literature describe problems. Just scan these titles: 1.Cow's Milk as a Cause of Infantile Colic Breast-Fed Infants. Lancet 2 (1978): 437 2.Dietary Protein-Induced Colitis in Breast- Fed Infants, J. Pediatr. I01 (1982): 906 3.The Question of the Elimination of Foreign Protein in Women's Milk, J. Immunology 19 (1930): 15 There are many others. There are dozens of studies describing the prompt appearance of cows' milk allergy in children being exclusively breast-fed! The cows' milk allergens simply appear in the mother's milk and are transmitted to the infant. A committee on nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics reported on the use of whole cows' milk in infancy (Pediatrics 1983: 72-253). They were unable to provide any cogent reason why bovine milk should be used before the first birthday yet continued to recommend its use! Doctor Frank Oski from the Upstate Medical Centre Department of Pediatrics, commenting on the recommendation, cited the problems of acute gastrointestinal blood loss in infants, the lack of iron, recurrent abdominal pain, milk- borne infections and contaminants, and said: Why give it at all - then or ever? In the face of uncertainty about many of the potential dangers of whole bovine milk, it would seem prudent to recommend that whole milk not be started until the answers are available. Isn't it time for these uncontrolled experiments on human nutrition to come to an end? In the same issue of Pediatrics he further commented: It is my thesis that whole milk should not be fed to the infant in the first year of life because of its association with iron deficiency anemia (milk is so deficient in iron that an infant would have to drink an impossible 31 quarts a day to get the RDA of 15 mg), acute gastrointiestinal bleeding, and various manifestations of food allergy. I suggest that unmodified whole bovine milk should not be consumed after infancy because of the problems of lactose intolerance, its contribution to the genesis of atherosclerosis, and its possible link to other diseases. In late 1992 Dr. Benjamin Spock, possibly the best known pediatrician in history, shocked the country when he articulated the same thoughts and specified avoidance for the first two years of life. Here is his quotation: I want to pass on the word to parents that cows' milk from the carton has definite faults for some babies. Human milk is the right one for babies. A study comparing the incidence of allergy and colic in the breast-fed infants of omnivorous and vegan mothers would be important. I haven't found such a study; it would be both important and inexpensive. And it will probably never be done. There is simply no academic or economic profit involved. OTHER PROBLEMS Let's just mention the problems of bacterial contamination. Salmonella, E. coli, and staphylococcal infections can be traced to milk. In the old days tuberculosis was a major problem and some folks want to go back to those times by insisting on raw milk on the basis that it's "natural." This is insanity! A study from UCLA showed that over a third of all cases of salmonella infection in California, 1980-1983 were traced to raw milk. That'll be a way to revive good old brucellosis again and I would fear leukemia, too. (More about that later). In England, and Wales where raw milk is still consumed there have been outbreaks of milk-borne diseases. The Journal of the American Medical Association (251: 483, 1984) reported a multi-state series of infections caused by Yersinia enterocolitica in pasteurised whole milk. This is despite safety precautions. All parents dread juvenile diabetes for their children. A Canadian study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Mar. 1990, describes a "...significant positive correlation between consumption of unfermented milk protein and incidence of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in data from various countries. Conversely a possible negative relationship is observed between breast-feeding at age 3 months and diabetes risk.". Another study from Finland found that diabetic children had higher levels of serum antibodies to cows’ milk (Diabetes Research 7(3): 137-140 March 1988). Here is a quotation from this study: We infer that either the pattern of cows' milk consumption is altered in children who will have insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or, their immunological reactivity to proteins in cows' milk is enhanced, or the permeability of their intestines to cows' milk protein is higher than normal. The April 18, 1992 British Medical Journal has a fascinating study contrasting the difference in incidence of juvenile insulin dependent diabetes in Pakistani children who have migrated to England. The incidence is roughly 10 times greater in the English group compared to children remaining in Pakistan! What caused this highly significant increase? The authors said that "the diet was unchanged in Great Britain." Do you believe that? Do you think that the availability of milk, sugar and fat is the same in Pakistan as it is in England? That a grocery store in England has the same products as food sources in Pakistan? I don't believe that for a minute. Remember, we're not talking here about adult onset, type II diabetes which all workers agree is strongly linked to diet as well as to a genetic predisposition. This study is a major blow to the "it's all in your genes" crowd. Type I diabetes was always considered to be genetic or possibly viral, but now this? So resistant are we to consider diet as causation that the authors of the last article concluded that the cooler climate in England altered viruses and caused the very real increase in diabetes! The first two authors had the same reluctance top admit the obvious. The milk just may have had something to do with the disease. The latest in this remarkable list of reports, a New England Journal of Medicine article (July 30, 1992), also reported in the Los Angeles Times. This study comes from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and from Finnish researchers. In Finland there is "...the world's highest rate of dairy product consumption and the world's highest rate of insulin dependent diabetes. The disease strikes about 40 children out of every 1,000 there contrasted with six to eight per 1,000 in the United States.... Antibodies produced against the milk protein during the first year of life, the researchers speculate, also attack and destroy the pancreas in a so-called auto-immune reaction, producing diabetes in people whose genetic makeup leaves them vulnerable." "...142 Finnish children with newly diagnosed diabetes. They found that every one had at least eight times as many antibodies against the milk protein as did healthy children, clear evidence that the children had a raging auto immune disorder." The team has now expanded the study to 400 children and is starting a trial where 3,000 children will receive no dairy products during the first nine months of life. "The study may take 10 years, but we'll get a definitive answer one way or the other," according to one of the researchers. I would caution them to be certain that the breast feeding mothers use on cows' milk in their diets or the results will be confounded by the transmission of the cows' milk protein in the mother's breast milk.... Now what was the reaction from the diabetes association? This is very interesting! Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, the president of the association says: "It does not mean that children should stop drinking milk or that parents of diabetics should withdraw dairy products. These are rich sources of good protein." (Emphasis added) My God, it's the "good protein" that causes the problem! Do you suspect that the dairy industry may have helped the American Diabetes Association in the past? LEUKEMIA? LYMPHOMA? THIS MAY BE THE WORST--BRACE YOURSELF! I hate to tell you this, but the bovine leukemia virus is found in more than three of five dairy cows in the United States! This involves about 80% of dairy herds. Unfortunately, when the milk is pooled, a very large percentage of all milk produced is contaminated (90 to 95 per cent). Of course the virus is killed in pasteurisation-- if the pasteurisation was done correctly. What if the milk is raw? In a study of randomly collected raw milk samples the bovine leukemia virus was recovered from two-thirds. I sincerely hope that the raw milk dairy herds are carefully monitored when compared to the regular herds. (Science 1981; 213:1014). This is a world-wide problem. One lengthy study from Germany deplored the problem and admitted the impossibility of keeping the virus from infected cows' milk from the rest of the milk. Several European countries, including Germany and Switzerland, have attempted to "cull" the infected cows from their herds. Certainly the United States must be the leader in the fight against leukemic dairy cows, right? Wrong! We are the worst in the world with the former exception of Venezuela according to Virgil Hulse MD, a milk specialist who also has a B.S. in Dairy Manufacturing as well as a Master's degree in Public Health. As mentioned, the leukemia virus is rendered inactive by pasteurisation. Of course. However, there can be Chernobyl like accidents. One of these occurred in the Chicago area in April, 1985. At a modern, large, milk processing plant an accidental "cross connection" between raw and pasteurized milk occurred. A violent salmonella outbreak followed, killing 4 and making an estimated 150,000 ill. Now the question I would pose to the dairy industry people is this: "How can you assure the people who drank this milk that they were not exposed to the ingestion of raw, unkilled, bully active bovine leukemia viruses?" Further, it would be fascinating to know if a "cluster" of leukemia cases blossoms in that area in 1 to 3 decades. There are reports of "leukemia clusters" elsewhere, one of them mentioned in the June 10, 1990 San Francisco Chronicle involving Northern California. What happens to other species of mammals when they are exposed to the bovine leukemia virus? It's a fair question and the answer is not reassuring. Virtually all animals exposed to the virus develop leukemia. This includes sheep, goats, and even primates such as rhesus monkeys and chimpanzees. The route of transmission includes ingestion (both intravenous and intramuscular) and cells present in milk. There are obviously no instances of transfer attempts to human beings, but we know that the virus can infect human cells in vitro. There is evidence of human antibody formation to the bovine leukemia virus; this is disturbing. How did the bovine leukemia virus particles gain access to humans and become antigens? Was it as small, denatured particles? If the bovine leukemia viruses causes human leukemia, we could expect the dairy states with known leukemic herds to have a higher incidence of human leukemia. Is this so? Unfortunately, it seems to be the case! Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin have statistically higher incidence of leukemia than the national average. In Russia and in Sweden, areas with uncontrolled bovine leukemia virus have been linked with increases in human leukemia. I am also told that veterinarians have higher rates of leukemia than the general public. Dairy farmers have significantly elevated leukemia rates. Recent research shows lymphocytes from milk fed to neonatal mammals gains access to bodily tissues by passing directly through the intestinal wall. An optimistic note from the University of Illinois, Ubana from the Department of Animal Sciences shows the importance of one's perspective. Since they are concerned with the economics of milk and not primarily the health aspects, they noted that the production of milk was greater in the cows with the bovine leukemia virus. However when the leukemia produced a persistent and significant lymphocytosis (increased white blood cell count), the production fell off. They suggested "a need to re-evaluate the economic impact of bovine leukemia virus infection on the dairy industry". Does this mean that leukemia is good for profits only if we can keep it under control? You can get the details on this business concern from Proc. Nat. Acad. Sciences, U.S. Feb. 1989. I added emphasis and am insulted that a university department feels that this is an economic and not a human health issue. Do not expect help from the Department of Agriculture or the universities. The money stakes and the political pressures are too great. You're on you own. What does this all mean? We know that virus is capable of producing leukemia in other animals. Is it proven that it can contribute to human leukemia (or lymphoma, a related cancer)? Several articles tackle this one: 1.Epidemiologic Relationships of the Bovine Population and Human Leukemia in Iowa. Am Journal of Epidemiology 112 (1980):80 2.Milk of Dairy Cows Frequently Contains a Leukemogenic Virus. Science 213 (1981): 1014 3.Beware of the Cow. (Editorial) Lancet 2 (1974):30 4.Is Bovine Milk A Health Hazard?. Pediatrics; Suppl. Feeding the Normal Infant. 75:182-186; 1985 In Norway, 1422 individuals were followed for 11 and a half years. Those drinking 2 or more glasses of milk per day had 3.5 times the incidence of cancer of the lymphatic organs. British Med. Journal 61:456-9, March 1990. One of the more thoughtful articles on this subject is from Allan S. Cunningham of Cooperstown, New York. Writing in the Lancet, November 27, 1976 (page 1184), his article is entitled, "Lymphomas and Animal-Protein Consumption". Many people think of milk as “liquid meat” and Dr. Cunningham agrees with this. He tracked the beef and dairy consumption in terms of grams per day for a one year period, 1955-1956., in 15 countries . New Zealand, United States and Canada were highest in that order. The lowest was Japan followed by Yugoslavia and France. The difference between the highest and lowest was quite pronounced: 43.8 grams/day for New Zealanders versus 1.5 for Japan. Nearly a 30-fold difference! (Parenthetically, the last 36 years have seen a startling increase in the amount of beef and milk used in Japan and their disease patterns are reflecting this, confirming the lack of 'genetic protection' seen in migration studies. Formerly the increase in frequency of lymphomas in Japanese people was only in those who moved to the USA)! An interesting bit of trivia is to note the memorial built at the Gyokusenji Temple in Shimoda, Japan. This marked the spot where the first cow was killed in Japan for human consumption! The chains around this memorial were a gift from the US Navy. Where do you suppose the Japanese got the idea to eat beef? The year? 1930. Cunningham found a highly significant positive correlation between deaths from lymphomas and beef and dairy ingestion in the 15 countries analysed. A few quotations from his article follow: The average intake of protein in many countries is far in excess of the recommended requirements. Excessive consumption of animal protein may be one co-factor in the causation of lymphomas by acting in the following manner. Ingestion of certain proteins results in the adsorption of antigenic fragments through the gastrointestinal mucous membrane. This results in chronic stimulation of lymphoid tissue to which these fragments gain access "Chronic immunological stimulation causes lymphomas in laboratory animals and is believed to cause lymphoid cancers in men." The gastrointestinal mucous membrane is only a partial barrier to the absorption of food antigens, and circulating antibodies to food protein is commonplace especially potent lymphoid stimulants. Ingestion of cows' milk can produce generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and profound adenoid hypertrophy. It has been conservatively estimated that more than 100 distinct antigens are released by the normal digestion of cows' milk which evoke production of all antibody classes [This may explain why pasteurized, killed viruses are still antigenic and can still cause disease. Here's more. A large prospective study from Norway was reported in the British Journal of Cancer 61 (3):456-9, March 1990. (Almost 16,000 individuals were followed for 11 and a half years). For most cancers there was no association between the tumour and milk ingestion. However, in lymphoma, there was a strong positive association. If one drank two glasses or more daily (or the equivalent in dairy products), the odds were 3.4 times greater than in persons drinking less than one glass of developing a lymphoma. There are two other cow-related diseases that you should be aware of. At this time they are not known to be spread by the use of dairy products and are not known to involve man. The first is bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and the second is the bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV). The first of these diseases, we hope, is confined to England and causes cavities in the animal's brain. Sheep have long been known to suffer from a disease called scrapie. It seems to have been started by the feeding of contaminated sheep parts, especially brains, to the British cows. Now, use your good sense. Do cows seem like carnivores? Should they eat meat? This profit-motivated practice backfired and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease, swept Britain. The disease literally causes dementia in the unfortunate animal and is 100 per cent incurable. To date, over 100,000 cows have been incinerated in England in keeping with British law. Four hundred to 500 cows are reported as infected each month. The British public is concerned and has dropped its beef consumption by 25 per cent, while some 2,000 schools have stopped serving beef to children. Several farmers have developed a fatal disease syndrome that resembles both BSE and CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob- Disease). But the British Veterinary Association says that transmission of BSE to humans is "remote." The USDA agrees that the British epidemic was due to the feeding of cattle with bonemeal or animal protein produced at rendering plants from the carcasses of scrapie-infected sheep. The have prohibited the importation of live cattle and zoo ruminants from Great Britain and claim that the disease does not exist in the United States. However, there may be a problem. "Downer cows" are animals who arrive at auction yards or slaughter houses dead, trampled, lacerated, dehydrated, or too ill from viral or bacterial diseases to walk. Thus they are "down." If they cannot respond to electrical shocks by walking, they are dragged by chains to dumpsters and transported to rendering plants where, if they are not already dead, they are killed. Even a "humane" death is usually denied them. They are then turned into protein food for animals as well as other preparations. Minks that have been fed this protein have developed a fatal encephalopathy that has some resemblance to BSE. Entire colonies of minks have been lost in this manner, particularly in Wisconsin. It is feared that the infective agent is a prion or slow virus possible obtained from the ill "downer cows." The British Medical Journal in an editorial whimsically entitled "How Now Mad Cow?" (BMJ vol. 304, 11 Apr. 1992:929- 30) describes cases of BSE in species not previously known to be affected, such as cats. They admit that produce contaminated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy entered the human food chain in England between 1986 and 1989. They say. "The result of this experiment is awaited." As the incubation period can be up to three decades, wait we must. The immunodeficency virus is seen in cattle in the United States and is more worrisome. Its structure is closely related to that of the human AIDS virus. At this time we do not know if exposure to the raw BIV proteins can cause the sera of humans to become positive for HIV. The extent of the virus among American herds is said to be "widespread". (The USDA refuses to inspect the meat and milk to see if antibodies to this retrovirus is present). It also has no plans to quarantine the infected animals. As in the case of humans with AIDS, there is no cure for BIV in cows. Each day we consume beef and diary products from cows infected with these viruses and no scientific assurance exists that the products are safe. Eating raw beef (as in steak Tartare) strikes me as being very risky, especially after the Seattle E. coli deaths of 1993. A report in the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research, October 1992, Vol. 56 pp.353-359 and another from the Russian literature, tell of a horrifying development. They report the first detection in human serum of the antibody to a bovine immunodeficiency virus protein. In addition to this disturbing report, is another from Russia telling us of the presence of virus proteins related to the bovine leukemia virus in 5 of 89 women with breast disease (Acta Virologica Feb. 1990 34(1): 19-26). The implications of these developments are unknown at present. However, it is safe to assume that these animal viruses are unlikely to "stay" in the animal kingdom. OTHER CANCERS--DOES IT GET WORSE? Unfortunately it does. Ovarian cancer--a particularly nasty tumour--was associated with milk consumption by workers at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. Drinking more than one glass of whole milk or equivalent daily gave a woman a 3.1 times risk over non-milk users. They felt that the reduced fat milk products helped reduce the risk. This association has been made repeatedly by numerous investigators. Another important study, this from the Harvard Medical School, analyzed data from 27 countries mainly from the 1970s. Again a significant positive correlation is revealed between ovarian cancer and per capita milk consumption. These investigators feel that the lactose component of milk is the responsible fraction, and the digestion of this is facilitated by the persistence of the ability to digest the lactose (lactose persistence) - a little different emphasis, but the same conclusion. This study was reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology 130 (5): 904-10 Nov. 1989. These articles come from two of the country's leading institutions, not the Rodale Press or Prevention Magazine. Even lung cancer has been associated with milk ingestion? The beverage habits of 569 lung cancer patients and 569 controls again at Roswell Park were studied in the International Journal of Cancer, April 15, 1989. Persons drinking whole milk 3 or more times daily had a 2-fold increase in lung cancer risk when compared to those never drinking whole milk. For many years we have been watching the lung cancer rates for Japanese men who smoke far more than American or European men but who develop fewer lung cancers. Workers in this research area feel that the total fat intake is the difference. There are not many reports studying an association between milk ingestion and prostate cancer. One such report though was of great interest. This is from the Roswell Park Memorial Institute and is found in Cancer 64 (3): 605-12, 1989. They analyzed the diets of 371 prostate cancer patients and comparable control subjects: Men who reported drinking three or more glasses of whole milk daily had a relative risk of 2.49 compared with men who reported never drinking whole milk the weight of the evidence appears to favour the hypothesis that animal fat is related to increased risk of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in US men and is the second leading cause of cancer mortality. WELL, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Is there any health reason at all for an adult human to drink cows' milk? It's hard for me to come up with even one good reason other than simple preference. But if you try hard, in my opinion, these would be the best two: milk is a source of calcium and it's a source of amino acids (proteins). Let's look at the calcium first. Why are we concerned at all about calcium? Obviously, we intend it to build strong bones and protect us against osteoporosis. And no doubt about it, milk is loaded with calcium. But is it a good calcium source for humans? I think not. These are the reasons. Excessive amounts of dairy products actually interfere with calcium absorption. Secondly, the excess of protein that the milk provides is a major cause of the osteoporosis problem. Dr. H egsted in England has been writing for years about the geographical distribution of osteoporosis. It seems that the countries with the highest intake of dairy products are invariably the countries with the most osteoporosis. He feels that milk is a cause of osteoporosis. Reasons to be given below. Numerous studies have shown that the level of calcium ingestion and especially calcium supplementation has no effect whatever on the development of osteoporosis. The most important such article appeared recently in the British Journal of Medicine where the long arm of our dairy industry can't reach. Another study in the United States actually showed a worsening in calcium balance in post-menopausal women given three 8-ounce glasses of cows' milk per day. (Am. Journal of Clin. Nutrition, 1985). The effects of hormone, gender, weight bearing on the axial bones, and in particular protein intake, are critically important. Another observation that may be helpful to our analysis is to note the absence of any recorded dietary deficiencies of calcium among people living on a natural diet without milk. For the key to the osteoporosis riddle, don’t look at calcium, look at protein. Consider these two contrasting groups. Eskimos have an exceptionally high protein intake estimated at 25 percent of total calories. They also have a high calcium intake at 2,500 mg/day. Their osteoporosis is among the worst in the world. The other instructive group are the Bantus of South Africa. They have a 12 percent protein diet, mostly p lant protein, and only 200 to 350 mg/day of calcium, about half our women's intake. The women have virtually no osteoporosis despite bearing six or more children and nursing them for prolonged periods! When African women immigrate to the United States, do they develop osteoporosis? The answer is yes, but not quite are much as Caucasian or Asian women. Thus, there is a genetic difference that is modified by diet. To answer the obvious question, "Well, where do you get your calcium?" The answer is: "From exactly the same place the cow gets the calcium, from green things that grow in the ground," mainly from leafy vegetables. After all, elephants and rhinos develop their huge bones (after being weaned) by eating green leafy plants, so do horses. Carnivorous animals also do quite nicely without leafy plants. It seems that all of earth's mammals do well if they live in harmony with their genetic programming and natural food. Only humans living an affluent life style have rampant osteoporosis. If animal references do not convince you, think of the several billion humans on this earth who have never seen cows' milk. Wouldn't you think osteoporosis would be prevalent in this huge group? The dairy people would suggest this but the truth is exactly the opposite. They have far less than that seen in the countries where dairy products are commonly consumed. It is the subject of another paper, but the truly significant determinants of osteoporosis are grossly excessive protein intakes and lack of weight bearing on long bones, both taking place over decades. Hormones play a secondary, but not trivial role in women. Milk is a deterrent to good bone health. THE PROTEIN MYTH Remember when you were a kid and the adults all told you to "make sure you get plenty of good protein". Protein was the nutritional "good guy”" when I was young. And of course milk is fitted right in. As regards protein, milk is indeed a rich source of protein- -"liquid meat," remember? However that isn't necessarily what we need. In actual fact it is a source of difficulty. Nearly all Americans eat too much protein. For this information we rely on the most authoritative source that I am aware of. This is the latest edition (1oth, 1989: 4th printing, Jan. 1992) of the Recommended Dietary Allowances produced by the National Research Council. Of interest, the current editor of this important work is Dr. Richard Havel of the University of California in San Francisco. First to be noted is that the recommended protein has been steadily revised downward in successive editions. The current recommendation is 0.75 g/kilo/day for adults 19 through 51 years. This, of course, is only 45 grams per day for the mythical 60 kilogram adult. You should also know that the WHO estimated the need for protein in adults to by .6g/kilo per day. (All RDA's are calculated with large safety allowances in case you're the type that wants to add some more to "be sure.") You can "get by" on 28 to 30 grams a day if necessary! Now 45 grams a day is a tiny amount of protein. That's an ounce and a half! Consider too, that the protein does not have to be animal protein. Vegetable protein is identical for all practical purposes and has no cholesterol and vastly less saturated fat. (Do not be misled by the antiquated belief that plant proteins must be carefully balanced to avoid deficiencies. This is not a realistic concern.) Therefore virtually all Americans, Canadians, British and European people are in a protein overloaded state. This has serious consequences when maintained over decades. The problems are the already mentioned osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and kidney damage. There is good evidence that certain malignancies, chiefly colon and rectal, are related to excessive meat intake. Barry Brenner, an eminent renal physiologist was the first to fully point out the dangers of excess protein for the kidney tubule. The dangers of the fat and cholesterol are known to all. Finally, you should know that the protein content of human milk is amount the lowest (0.9%) in mammals. IS THAT ALL OF THE TROUBLE? Sorry, there's more. Remember lactose? This is the principal carbohydrate of milk. It seems that nature provides new- borns with the enzymatic equipment to metabolize lactose, but this ability often extinguishes by age 4 or 5 years. What is the problem with lactose or milk sugar? It seems that it is a disaccharide which is too large to be absorbed into the blood stream without first being broken down into monosaccharides, namely galactose and glucose. This requires the presence of an enzyme, lactase plus additional enzymes to break down the galactose into glucose. Let's think about his for a moment. Nature gives us the ability to metabolize lactose for a few years and then shuts off the mechanism. Is Mother Nature trying to tell us something? Clearly all infants must drink milk. The fact that so many adults cannot seems to be related to the tendency for nature to abandon mechanisms that are not needed. At least half of the adult humans on this earth are lactose intolerant. It was not until the relatively recent introduction of dairy herding and the ability to "borrow" milk from another group of mammals that the survival advantage of preserving lactase (the enzyme that allows us to digest lactose) became evident. But why would it be advantageous to drink cows' milk? After all, most of the human beings in the history of the world did. And further, why was it just the white or light skinned humans who retained this knack while the pigmented people tended to lose it? Some students of evolution feel that white skin is a fairly recent innovation, perhaps not more than 20,000 or 30,000 years old. It clearly has to do with the Northward migration of early man to cold and relatively sunless areas when skins and clothing became available. Fair skin allows the production of Vitamin D from sunlight more readily than does dark skin. However, when only the face was exposed to sunlight that area of fair skin was insufficient to provide the vitamin D from sunlight. If dietary and sunlight sources were poorly available, the ability to use the abundant calcium in cows' milk would give a survival advantage to humans who could digest that milk. This seems to be the only logical explanation for fair skinned humans having a high degree of lactose tolerance when compared to dark skinned people. How does this break down? Certain racial groups, namely blacks are up to 90% lactose intolerant as adults. Caucasians are 20 to 40% lactose intolerant. Orientals are midway between the above two groups. Diarrhea, gas and abdominal cramps are the results of substantial milk intake in such persons. Most American Indians cannot tolerate milk. The milk industry admits that lactose intolerance plays intestinal havoc with as many as 50 million Americans. A lactose-intolerance industry has sprung up and had sales of $117 million in 1992 (Time May 17, 1993.) What if you are lactose-intolerant and lust after dairy products? Is all lost? Not at all. It seems that lactose is largely digested by bacteria and you will be able to enjoy your cheese despite lactose intolerance. Yogurt is similar in this respect. Finally, and I could never have dreamed this up, geneticists want to splice genes to alter the composition of milk (Am J Clin Nutr 1993 Suppl 302s). One could quibble and say that milk is totally devoid of fiber content and that its habitual use will predispose to constipation and bowel disorders. The association with anemia and occult intestinal bleeding in infants is known to all physicians. This is chiefly from its lack of iron and its irritating qualities for the intestinal mucosa. The pediatric literature abounds with articles describing irritated intestinal lining, bleeding, increased permeability as well as colic, diarrhea and vomiting in cows'milk-sensitive babies. The anemia gets a double push by loss of blood and iron as well as deficiency of iron in the cows' milk. Milk is also the leading cause of childhood allergy. LOW FAT One additional topic: the matter of "low fat" milk. A common and sincere question is: "Well, low fat milk is OK, isn't it?" The answer to this question is that low fat milk isn't low fat. The term "low fat" is a marketing term used to gull the public. Low fat milk contains from 24 to 33% fat as calories! The 2% figure is also misleading. This refers to weight. They don't tell you that, by weight, the milk is 87% water! "Well, then, kill-joy surely you must approve of non-fat milk!" I hear this quite a bit. (Another constant concern is: "What do you put on your cereal?") True, there is little or no fat, but now you have a relative overburden of protein and lactose. It there is something that we do not need more of it is another simple sugar-lactose, composed of galactose and glucose. Millions of Americans are lactose intolerant to boot, as noted. As for protein, as stated earlier, we live in a society that routinely ingests far more protein than we need. It is a burden for our bodies, especially the kidneys, and a prominent cause of osteoporosis. Concerning the dry cereal issue, I would suggest soy milk, rice milk or almond milk as a healthy substitute. If you're still concerned about calcium, "Westsoy" is formulated to have the same calcium concentration as milk. SUMMARY To my thinking, there is only one valid reason to drink milk or use milk products. That is just because we simply want to. Because we like it and because it has become a part of our culture. Because we have become accustomed to its taste and texture. Because we like the way it slides down our throat. Because our parents did the very best they could for us and provided milk in our earliest training and conditioning. They taught us to like it. And then probably the very best reason is ice cream! I've heard it described "to die for". I had one patient who did exactly that. He had no obvious vices. He didn't smoke or drink, he didn’t eat meat, his diet and lifestyle was nearly a perfectly health promoting one; but he had a passion. You guessed it, he loved rich ice cream. A pint of the richest would be a lean day's ration for him. On many occasions he would eat an entire quart - and yes there were some cookies and other pastries. Good ice cream deserves this after all. He seemed to be in good health despite some expected "middle age spread" when he had a devastating stroke which left him paralyzed, miserable and helpless, and he had additional strokes and d ied several years later never having left a hospital or rehabilitation unit. Was he old? I don't think so. He was in his 50s. So don't drink milk for health. I am convinced on the weight of the scientific evidence that it does not "do a body good." Inclusion of milk will only reduce your diet's nutritional value and safety. Most of the people on this planet live very healthfully without cows' milk. You can too. It will be difficult to change; we've been conditioned since childhood to think of milk as "nature's most perfect food." I'll guarantee you that it will be safe, improve your health and it won't cost anything. I have a life altering decision to make, please help me? On Saturday, stay home and watch the NCIS marathon or go to Chicago and risk getting hammered, naked and possibly incarcerated. It's Memorial weekend, please keep that in mind and if you have a Magic 8 Ball, you may use it to help me in this decision. Health > Mental Health
Advice on teachin in an alternative year round school? I need some advice on accepting a job at a year round alternative residential school. This school is for students who have mental health issues and are in long term residential for 6-18 months. The issues is the school is newly set up and year round but there are no scheduled breaks for the students or teacher throughout the year. It seems to me that there would be at least 2 weeks in the summer and a break during Christmas. I was told that teachers could coordinate between each other for a week off here and there but I think that could be conflicting when everyone wants the 4th of July week off or Memorial Day, or Christmas. Please give me some imput or thoughts about what you think about this situation? Please share if you have any related experiences.

Is Hillary justified in wanting a $1m appropriation to erect a memorial to Woodstock? Thanks to the other poster for bringing this to my attention. I always suspected that she'd like to return all of us to eating out of trashcans and living on the streets. Could this be the proof I've been looking for? Has she considered how many children could be fed, how many tuitions could be paid, how much FREE HEALTH CARE could be given out for that amount of money? This woman is ridiculous.......... I do believe this is proof that the other suspicion I've posted here before holds true, also. If she wins, it won't be long before she goes back to wearing the hippie garb that used to earn her so much ire and repulsion at the Arkansas State Capitol!!!!!!!! Birkenstocks, dirty unkempt hair, long skirts and love beads - and away we go!!!!!!! Drop a beer can there and be done with it. Thank you, Bravo. Very nice....
A poem I wrote while missing my grandpa especially because of Memorial Day coming. Good? Just needed to write. I sleep at night and dream of you and wish to hold your hand I remember your laugh and your strong body ....and how you whistled when you went to the potty With memories of pink peppermints, Wurthers, and Bugles when we'd visit; and how you knew each of us without your sight; and smiled at the TV when Lawrence Welk was on at night I remember tales of casino trips when your luck was endless and games of Skip-Bo at the house where we saw your competitive side; and how you took your blindness and ailing health in stride We'll never forget, we'll always remember; The times we were grateful to spend together. When I look to the sky and wonder where you are --something tells me you're the perfect star that shines so bright and will never die 'til we're all together and the light can subside. I know it's selfish to wish you back, But how do you fight when you want something so bad; How do you stop your tears from falling; And how do you smile without it feeling appalling. I pray and have faith we'll meet sometime soon-- When I can reside with you and the Man In The Moon I know it's not the greatest

Why don't military doctors care about my actual health? I have a giant hole, yes a freaking hole, in my right tonsil. it trapped food and caused an infection. the doctor's response, "I see nothing wrong, the tonsils can stay." Mind you I just got off of my fifth case of strep in the last three years. What the fuck is wrong with military, let me rephrase that, AIR FORCE and NAVY doctors. Without the sick, you have no job. So how about you do your job and take care of the sick? (Friday I went to the ER at a Naval Base because the Air Force hospital was shut down, get this, for Memorial Day weekend, lazy bastards. So, I go into day after they told me I only have a "sore throat" because I saw a hole in my tonsil, and they pushed me back out like I came in with a runny nose) Seriously hope I or someone else dies because these military doctors are on a high horse and they need a reality check. Civilian doctors: FTW (Oh, and if you ask what my question is, read the headline. That's the question)

Did You See This ? More illegal immigrants are pouring into Texas to give birth? 'Border baby' boom strains S. Texas More illegal immigrants are pouring into the state to give birth By JAMES PINKERTON Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle RIO GRANDE CITY — First it was a trickle, now it's a flood. Rising numbers of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America are streaming into Texas to give birth, straining hospitals and costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, health officials say. Doctors and health officials say they are overwhelmed by both the new arrivals and those immigrant mothers who already are in the state. Even Houston's feeling the pinch. An estimated 70 percent to 80 percent of the 10,587 births at Ben Taub General Hospital and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital last year were to undocumented immigrants, administrators say. Also feeling the strain is Starr County, an already poor South Texas county that has the region's only taxpayer-supported hospital district. Immigrants "want a U.S.-born baby" and know that emergency room staffers don't collect any money up front, said Dr. Mario Rodriguez, an obstetrician in Starr County. "The word is out: Come to Starr County and get delivered for free. Why pay $1,000 in Mexico when you can get it for free?" Rodriguez said. ''When we are separated only by the distance of the river, it's easy to do," Starr County hospital administrator Thalia Muñoz said. "It's gotten worse, and it's because the economy in Mexico is not good and because we provide all these benefits." Unfortunately, doctors say, Starr County isn't alone. ''Our little snapshot is duplicated in all the municipalities between here and California," said Tony Falcon, a Rio Grande City physician who was appointed to the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission in April. ''What you see here is what is happening in Brownsville, McAllen, El Paso and San Diego." He operates a private family clinic and delivers babies at the Starr County hospital. About a third of his deliveries are what he calls "walk-ins" — mothers in labor showing up at the ER. ''Obviously, it has a huge impact on patient health and the kind of health care that's provided," Falcon said. "You don't get the kind of prenatal care you should get." 'Anchor babies' Immigration-control advocates regard the U.S.-born infants as "anchor babies" because they give their undocumented parents and relatives a way to petition for citizenship. They estimate that 360,000 of these babies are born in the U.S. every year and warn that the numbers are rising. Once parents have an "anchor baby," they become more difficult to deport, said Jack Martin, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a lobby organization in Washington, D.C. ''It's a fairly big factor in complicating the removal of illegal aliens," Martin said. "Illegal aliens know that and, to some extent, we think they're being influenced into having children as soon as they get into the U.S. to complicate their removal." Some lawmakers want to begin denying citizenship to babies born to illegal immigrants. Birthright citizenship, as it is known, has been in force since the approval of the Constitution's 14th Amendment in 1868. But several bills under consideration in Congress would abolish the longstanding federal policy. Sponsors include U.S. Reps. Ron Paul, R-Lake Jackson, and Nathan Deal, R-Ga. In a largely symbolic move, the Michigan House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Sept. 8 to end birthright citizenship. Undocumented immigrants say they are being attacked unfairly and think that all children born in the U.S. should have equal rights. Socorro Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant who in August gave birth to her fourth child on U.S. soil, said she and her husband aren't trying to take advantage of immigration laws or abuse the health care system. ''We're not here to have a child. We are here to work," she said as she cradled her infant son, Orlando Soto. Gonzalez, 42, said she moved to South Texas four years ago to join her husband, a cabinet maker. Two of their older children were born at a private midwife's clinic, she said, and two were delivered at taxpayer expense at hospitals in McAllen. Gonzalez said the benefits of undocumented immigrants' labor in the U.S. more than compensate for the costs of their medical bills. ''I don't see why they should deny a medical service if we're here struggling for this country," she said. ''Because of the help of Mexican workers, whether they want us or not, this country is progressing." Still, someone has to pay the bills, and not everyone is happy about that. Uncollected medical bills Starr County Memorial Hospital had $3.6 million in uncollected medical bills in 2005, up from $1.5 million in 2002. The total when fiscal 2006 ends on Sept. 30 is expected to hit $3.9 million, chief financial officer Rafael Olivarez said. Unpaid bills for the past five years will reach nearly $13 million, he said. To make up for the shortfall, Starr County's hospital district is proposing a 25 percent tax hike. Already, the U.S. government is pitching in, setting aside $1 billion in Medicaid funds to pay for emergency care received by undocumented migrants over the next four years. But Olivarez said getting the reimbursements isn't easy. Federal officials ''told us at a meeting they would pay us about 20 cents on the dollar," he said. "But it's better than nothing." No one knows for sure how many undocumented immigrants there are or what they cost the health care system. Most hospitals don't ask whether patients have papers. Total cost unknown ''It puts them in the position of being border police," said Amanda Engler, a spokeswoman for the Texas Hospital Association in Austin. Harris County Hospital District officials say their policy is not to question patients directly about their citizenship. ''We do not explicitly ask if our patients are illegal, but we do ask them for proof of Harris County residency," district spokeswoman Shannon Rasp said. "Often citizenship status becomes clearer when billing issues come up." Eighty-three percent of the undocumented immigrants receiving in-patient care at the district's hospitals and clinics last year were from Mexico, officials said. Six percent were from El Salvador or Guatemala. And the remaining 11 percent were from such countries as Britain, Canada, Haiti, India, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria and Vietnam. ''Using anecdotal information provided us by our staff, statistics from other public hospital systems and our patient demographics, we believe that approximately 70 to 80 percent of our obstetrics patients are undocumented," Rasp said. In all, 57,072 patients visited the district's hospitals, clinics and health centers last year, and nearly a fifth were undocumented, Rasp said. The cost of their treatment was $97.3 million, up from $55 million in 2002. angela R you don't know where I live I know all about Texas I don't need you to advise me on the state. Get Ur facts right before you make your comments instead of just assuming

Does anyone understand the Obama doublespeak? quoting... "Enough is enough," Obama, an Illinois senator, declared, adding that Bush should not get "a blank check to continue down this same, disastrous path." Does the "disastrous path" Obama refers to mean the 17 Billion in farm subsidy and (gotta love it) funding toward natinalized child health care that the president never asked for and is being blackmailed to authrorize. The lack of a roll call vote on war funding for the pelosi ite extremists to continue to propogate the masked power grab from the razor thin manadate of 06. Hillary Clinton and Obama BOTH declining to go on record about funding Iraq for "heavens" per chance offending the pelosi ite extremist voters of pro or con persuasion. Coming inches close to going on vacation for the Memorial Day holiday while soldiers are left dangling due to the Pelosi/Reid regime's posturing. Democrat John Murtha put it best...(quoting) "I feel a direction change in the air," problem is its got a foul odor to it

Now Limbaugh is picking on a hospitalized man with a brain tumor - Is this what a leader does? Limbaugh is at it again! He's picking on Senator Ted Kennedy who in the hospital suffering from a brain tumor. He claims Ted will be dead before the health care bill gets past and the Dems will his death to call the health care bill the Kennedy memorial bill. It sure takes a lot of courage to pick on a guy in a hospital - doesn't it. Then again look at the leadership Gingrich gave with regards to his wife when she had cancer, oh I'm sorry - ex-wife. Yeah I remember the Parkinson's issue with Fox. That was just as low. This guy really has no spine. bmoc what the Hell did you just ask? I can't even parse your words into half a sentence. I'm sorry that most of you don't listen to Rush and just pick up his talking points. I do listen to Rush. I've heard the Fox issue, the Phony Soldier Issue, The Obama Fail speech. He called Fox a faker, he mocked his disease and called him a liar. That takes a lot of bravery - picking on someone who can't fight back. Its like Rumsfield owning up for Prisoner Abuse when he knows he won't be punished.

Does our public medical care system treat illegal immigrants better than American citizens? This has been around for a bit, but I thought is was worth sharing and debating: Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas is a fairly famous institution and for a variety of reasons: 1. John F. Kennedy died there in 1963 2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after 3. Jack Ruby, who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died there a few years later by coincidence On the flip side, Parkland is also home to the second busiest maternity ward in the country with almost 16,000 new babies arriving each year. (That's almost 44 per day -- every day) A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants.' Crikey, that's 11,200 anchor babies born every year just in Dallas. The average patient in Parkland's maternity wards is 25 years old, married and giving birth to her second child. She is also an illegal immigrant. By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on their immigration status or ability to pay. OK, fine. That doesn't mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital, they do. Parkland Memorial Hospital has nine prenatal clinics. NINE. The Dallas Morning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child -- her previous two were also born at Parkland. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.) How long has this been going on? What are the long-term effects? Well, another subject of the article was born at Parkland in 1986 shortly after her mother entered the U.S. Illegally -- now she is having her own child there as well. Because these women are illegal immigrants they do not have to provide any sort of legitimate identification -- no proof of income. An American citizen would have to provide a social security number which would reveal their annual income -- an illegal immigrant need only claim to be poor and the hospital must take them at their word. My husband is a pilot for the United States Navy (yes, he fought in Iraq) and while the health care is good, we Navy wives don't get any of these perks! Car seats? Diapers? Not so much. So my question is this: Does our public medical care system treat illegal immigrants better than American citizens? Yes it does! As I mentioned, the care I have received is perfectly adequate but it's bare bones, meat and potato medical care -- not top of line. Their (the illegals) medical care is free -- simply because they are illegal immigrants? Once again, there is no way to verify their income. Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County earn less than $40,000 per year. (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job. Yeah, the 'free' care is not so easy for Americans.) There are about 140 patients who received roughly $4 million dollars for un-reimbursed medical care. As it turns out, they did not qualify for free treatment because they resided outside of Dallas County. So the hospital is going to sue them! Illegals get it all free! But U.S. citizens who live outside of Dallas County get sued! No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multicultural) requirement. http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/parkland.asp
can someone tell me what is wrong with this summary? “Regarding the Pain of Other” by Susan Sontag states that photographs can inform impact and change people’s mind about events from the past and the present. The passage supports this idea by giving examples of photographs that depicted the pain and misfortune of people from several events. Some of them were the public health authorities in Canada that printed on every pack of cigarettes a photograph of a cancerous lung to inform people not to smoke and its effects. The second the photographs of two veterans from the first World War who had their faces disfigured because of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Another example, the photographs about the abuse of the Jews received in the concentration camps in the time of the Nazi. In these cases the purpose of photography is to illustrate and give references from the past and the present. Also to help the viewer to visualize in his mind how the story of really happened. All these photographs according to Sontag left chasm that could never be fill that stay in their memories of the people eternally. For these reason some people wanted those crimes to be remembered and for that they want to have museums or temples that have chorological illustrations of their suffering. Unfortunately those museums were built only for specific events such as the Holocaust Memorial in Washington D.C. and for the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Meanwhile other’s suffering weren’t remembered like the slavery of African American and a museum was not constructed to remember their struggled that they went through. This is why photography is used in these cases, to show the injustice, difference and events in which others are treated unequal or to show the effort and reality of others.
What am I doing wrong ? Ok, so, my goal is to loose 20 lbs by Memorial Day. I eat healthy so I know it's not from that. I do an exercise video (cardio) 3 mornings a week ( for 30 min each) & go to the gym 2-3 nights & do an hour on the elliptical & go home & do my strength training (dumbells , stability ball & crunches). I can't go to the gym more often, due to scheduling conflicts & can only do those vidoes 3 mornings a week b/c those are the only times I am home to be able to do them ( I stay at my bf's the other times & have to use the time I would use for my exercising to commute to work) I have been doing this for 2 weeks so far & have not lost anything, nor do my cloths feel any looser (so I know that it's not like I'm loosing fat but gaining muscle). What else can I do ? Please do not suggest any change in my diet b/c I cannot do that (for health reasons) nor suggest going to the gym more b/c I cannot do that either. Do not suggest doing a colon cleanse or I will report abuse. Thanks !

Why were the Christians frightened enough to kill and disperse the Celts who worshipped the Gods in "details?" The Celtic Ancestor Gods. Beli Mawr (the Great), God of the Sun Beli Mawr, called Belenos by the Romans, was the Celtic God of the Sun, representing the curative powers of the Sun’s heat. His festival of Beltane, when bonfires were lit to welcome in the Summer and encourage the Sun’s warmth, was held on May 1st, and is remembered in today's May Day festivities. His symbols were the horse (as shown, for example, by the clay horse figurine offerings at Beli’s Sainte-Sabine shrine in Burgundy), and also the Wheel (as illustrated on the famous Gundestrup Cauldron). Perhaps, like Apollo, whom he became identified with, Beli was thought to ride the Sun across the sky in a horse-drawn chariot. Indeed, a Celtic model horse and wagon, carrying a gilded sun-disc, has been found at Trundholm in Denmark. Sometimes he is illustrated riding a single horse, throwing thunder-bolts (hence an occasional idenification with Jupiter) and using his symbolic radiating wheel as a shield, as he tramples the chthonic forces of a snake-limbed giant. This personification is similar to the classic depiction of the Archangel St.Michael defeating the Devil. Sacred pagan hills associated with Beli, are thought to have had their dedications transferred to this saint (or sometimes St.George) by the early Christians. Well known examples include St.Michael’s Mount (Cornwall) and the churches of St.Michael on Brent Tor (Devon), and Burrow Mump and Glastonbury Tor (Somerset): All on a supposed ley line that faces the Rising Sun at Beltane. He may also have been worshipped on Dragon Hill below the great Uffington White Horse in Berkshire. Don, Goddess of Fertility Don was known, in the Celtic World, by several similar names: Danu or Anu being the most popular alternatives. She was a Mother-Goddess, the wife of Beli Mawr (the Great) and considered to be the ancestor of all the Gods, the Tuatha dé Danann, who found themselves obliged to the reside in the Otherworld when Miled brought the Celts to the British Isles. She still looks down on us from the night's sky where she appears as Llys Don, better known as Casseopeia. Don was especially popular in Munster, though her most lasting memorial is a mountain in County Kerry called the Dá Chích Anann or "Breast of Anu". The Dane Hills in Leicestershire are also named after her and this area, perhaps a major centre for her cult, is where her memory lives on as Black Annis. This hideous old crone's habit of eating young children was, no doubt, invented by incoming Christians to blacken the name of the Celtic Goddess. In Christendom, the lady usually took on the guise of St.Anne, however, in order to smooth the path of conversion. This saint's popularity in Brittany probably stems from the previous worship of the Celtic Goddess there. Don was also the patroness of springs and fountains, hence the numerous St.Anne's Wells throughout Britain today. Early medieval historians confused Don (alias Anu) with Anna, the daughter of St.Joseph of Arimathea. In Arthurian legend she probably appears as Annowre, a sorceress who imprisoned Arthur in the Perilous Forest. Lludd Llaw Ereint (the Silver-Handed), God of Health & Healing Lludd (or Nudd), called Nodens by the Romans, was the Celtic God of Healing, and the son of Beli Mawr (the Great). He had a large shrine at Lydney in Gloucestershire, where the devoted made offerings of small bronze representations of their diseased limbs. He was sometimes identified with the protective Mars or the regenerative Silvanus and his companion and symbol was the dog: a deerhound whose lick could cure the afflicted. An old story explains his connection with amputees. At one time, Lludd was the leader of the gods, but he was wounded in battle and lost his hand. Gorfannon, the divine-smith, made him a new one out of Silver, but he was still forced to abdicate in favour of his nephew, Lleu Llaw Gyffes. Later, Lludd was troubled by a constant scream that was heard the eve of every Beltane. He travelled to Gaul, where his brother, Llefelys, was particularly worshipped, to ask his advice. He explained that the cry was made by two fighting dragons. Lludd managed to capture the creatures and imprisoned them deep below Dinas Emrys. Lludd may have been particularly worshipped in London, which was said to have been named after him. Afallach, God of the Underworld Afallach was the son of Lludd Llaw Ereint (the Silver-Handed). He was one of the Celtic gods of the Underworld. He ruled Avalon where he lived with his daughter, Modron, and her nine sisters. Avalon was like the Celtic heaven, a peaceful island far away where apples grew and after which it became named. It is, of course, best known as the place where the High-King Arthwyr was taken after he was fatally wounded at the Battle of Camlann. Afallach himself appears in Arthurian legends as King Evelake Remember, the above is mostly the records of Celts not on the European continent. I'll see if I can post some info on Continent Celts.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like Veterans are treated poorly when they have to be seen at the VA ? I am a female veteran being seen at the women's health clinic at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital. And I have nothing bad to say about the doctor that was appointed to me.But as far as the Woman that works the front desk when you walk in to the woman's clinic maybe she need more training when it comes to dealing with patients because I have never been so disrespected at a doctors office before, I had called the day before with a question pertaining to my medication not knowing that my doctor would be out for two weeks so I was told to call the women's pharmacy which let me know they could not help me, then told me to ask physical therapy the next day when i had a appointment which i did today. But they told me to go to the women's clinic and ask for the person that was taking care of the doctors patients while she was away and when I did that I was treated like trash .The woman told me she was not their yesterday and what did i want her to do it is not what she said, it is how she said it,the last time I went to a doctor's office I don't remember anyone raising their voice at me and Being confrontational. When I go to she my doctor I should not have to worry if the first person I have to talk is going to try and make me feel like I am small and below them.May be this is why more vets don't get the health care that is needed. I served my country and I believe that out of all places I should at least be treated like a human at our Vet Hospitals and Clinics. I Just need to vent.

what is THE STATUS OF WOMAN IN ISLAM ? THE STATUS OF WOMAN IN ISLAM By Jamal A. Badawi CONTENTS PREFACE INTRODUCTION HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES Women in Ancient Civilization WOMEN IN ISLAM 1. The Spiritual Aspect 2. The Social Aspect (a) As a Child and Adolescent (b) As a Wife (c) As a Mother 3. The Economic Aspect 4. The political Aspect CONCLUSION BIBLIOGRAPHY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PREFACE Family, society and ultimately the whole of mankind is treated by Islam on an ethical basis. Differentiation in sex is neither a credit nor a drawback for the sexes. Therefore, when we talk about status of woman in Islam it should not lead us to think that Islam has no specific guidelines, limitations, responsibilities and obligations for men. What makes one valuable and respectable in the eyes of Allah, the Creator of mankind and the universe, is neither one's prosperity, position, intelligence, physical strength nor beauty, but only one's Allah-consciousness and awareness (taqwa). However, since in the Western culture and in cultures influenced by it, there exists a disparity between men and women there is more need for stating Islam's position on important issues in a clear way. Dr. Jamal Badawi's essay, The Status of Women in Islam, was originally published in our quarterly journal, Al-lttihad, Vol. 8, No. 2, Sha'ban 1391/Sept 1971. Since then it has been one of our most-demanded publications. We thank Br. Jamal for permitting us to reprint his essay. We hope it will clarify many of the misconceptions. Anis Ahmad, Director Dept. of Education and Training MSA of U.S. and Canada P.O. Box 38 Plainfield, IN 46168 USA Jumada al Thani 1400 April 1980 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. INTRODUCTION The status of women in society is neither a new issue nor is it a fully settled one. The position of Islam on this issue has been among the subjects presented to the Western reader with the least objectivity. This paper is intended to provide a brief and authentic exposition of what Islam stands for in this regard. The teachings of Islam are based essentially on the Qur'an (God's revelation) and Hadeeth (elaboration by Prophet Muhammad). The Qur'an and the Hadeeth, properly and unbiasedly understood, provide the basic source of authentication for any position or view which is attributed to Islam. The paper starts with a brief survey of the status of women in the pre-Islamic era. It then focuses on these major questions: What is the position of Islam regarding the status of woman in society? How similar or different is that position from "the spirit of the time," which was dominant when Islam was revealed? How would this compare with the "rights" which were finally gained by woman in recent decades? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES One major objective of this paper is to provide a fair evaluation of what Islam contributed (or failed to contribute) toward the restoration of woman's dignity and rights. In order to achieve this objective, it may be useful to review briefly how women were treated in general in previous civilizations and religions, especially those which preceded Islam (Pre-610 C.E.). Part of the information provided here, however, describes the status of woman as late as the nineteenth century, more than twelve centuries after Islam. Women in Ancient Civilization Describing the status of the Indian woman, Encyclopedia Britannica states: In India, subjection was a cardinal principle. Day and night must women be held by their protectors in a state of dependence says Manu. The rule of inheritance was agnatic, that is descent traced through males to the exclusion of females. In Hindu scriptures, the description of a good wife is as follows: "a woman whose mind, speech and body are kept in subjection, acquires high renown in this world, and, in the next, the same abode with her husband." In Athens, women were not better off than either the Indian or the Roman women. "Athenian women were always minors, subject to some male - to their father, to their brother, or to some of their male kin. Her consent in marriage was not generally thought to be necessary and "she was obliged to submit to the wishes of her parents, and receive from them her husband and her lord, even though he were stranger to her." A Roman wife was described by an historian as: "a babe, a minor, a ward, a person incapable of doing or acting anything according to her own individual taste, a person continually under the tutelage and guardianship of her husband." In the Encyclopedia Britannica, we find a summary of the legal status of women in the Roman civilization: In Roman Law a woman was even in historic times completely dependent. If married she and her property passed into the power of her husband . . . the wife was the purchased property of her husband, and like a slave acquired only for his benefit. A woman could not exercise any civil or public office . could not be a witness, surety, tutor, or curator; she could not adopt or be adopted, or make will or contract. Among the Scandinavian races women were: under perpetual tutelage, whether married or unmarried. As late as the Code of Christian V, at the end of the 17th Century, it was enacted that if a woman married without the consent of her tutor he might have, if he wished, administration and usufruct of her goods during her life. According to the English Common Law: ...all real property which a wife held at the time of a marriage became a possession of her husband. He was entitled to the rent from the land and to any profit which might be made from operating the estate during the joint life of the spouses. As time passed, the English courts devised means to forbid a husband's transferring real property without the consent of his wife, but he still retained the right to manage it and to receive the money which it produced. As to a wife's personal property, the husband's power was complete. He had the right to spend it as he saw fit. Only by the late nineteenth Century did the situation start to improve. "By a series of acts starting with the Married women's Property Act in 1870, amended in 1882 and 1887, married women achieved the right to own property and to enter contracts on a par with spinsters, widows, and divorcees." As late as the Nineteenth Century an authority in ancient law, Sir Henry Maine, wrote: "No society which preserves any tincture of Christian institutions is likely to restore to married women the personal liberty conferred on them by the Middle Roman Law." In his essay The Subjection of Women, John Stuart Mill wrote: We are continually told that civilization and Christianity have restored to the woman her just rights. Meanwhile the wife is the actual bondservant of her husband; no less so, as far as the legal obligation goes, than slaves commonly so called. Before moving on to the Qur'anic decrees concerning the status of woman, a few Biblical decrees may shed more light on the subject, thus providing a better basis for an impartial evaluation. In the Mosaic Law, the wife was betrothed. Explaining this concept, the Encyclopedia Biblica states: "To betroth a wife to oneself meant simply to acquire possession of her by payment of the purchase money; the betrothed is a girl for whom the purchase money has been paid." From the legal point of view, the consent of the girl was not necessary for the validation of her marriage. "The girl's consent is unnecessary and the need for it is nowhere suggested in the Law." As to the right of divorce, we read in the Encyclopedia Biblica: "The woman being man's property, his right to divorce her follows as a matter of course." The right to divorce was held only by man. "In the Mosaic Law divorce was a privilege of the husband only .... " The position of the Christian Church until recent centuries seems to have been influenced by both the Mosaic Law and by the streams of thought that were dominant in its contemporary cultures. In their book, Marriage East and West, David and Vera Mace wrote: Let no one suppose, either, that our Christian heritage is free of such slighting judgments. It would be hard to find anywhere a collection of more degrading references to the female sex than the early Church Fathers provide. Lecky, the famous historian, speaks of (these fierce incentives which form so conspicuous and so grotesque a portion of the writing of the Fathers . . . woman was represented as the door of hell, as the mother of all human ills. She should be ashamed at the very thought that she is a woman. She should live in continual penance on account of the curses she has brought upon the world. She should be ashamed of her dress, for it is the memorial of her fall. She should be especially ashamed of her beauty, for it is the most potent instrument of the devil). One of the most scathing of these attacks on woman is that of Tertullian: Do you know that you are each an Eve? The sentence of God on this sex of yours lives in this age: the guilt must of necessity live too. You are the devil's gateway: you are the unsealer of that forbidden tree; you are the first deserters of the divine law; you are she who persuades him whom the devil was not valiant enough to attack. You destroyed so easily God's image, man. On account of your desert - that is death - even the Sop of God had to die). Not only did the church affirm the inferior status of woman, it deprived her of legal rights she had previously enjoyed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. WOMAN IN ISLAM In the midst of the darkness that engulfed the world, the divine revelation echoed in the wide desert of Arabia with a fresh, noble, and universal message to humanity: "O Mankind, keep your duty to your Lord who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate (of same kind) and from them twain has spread a multitude of men and women" (Qur'an 4: 1). A scholar who pondered about this verse states: "It is believed that there is no text, old or new, that deals with the humanity of the woman from all aspects with such amazing brevity, eloquence, depth, and originality as this divine decree." Stressing this noble and natural conception, them Qur'an states: He (God) it is who did create you from a single soul and therefrom did create his mate, that he might dwell with her (in love)...(Qur'an 7:189) The Creator of heavens and earth: He has made for you pairs from among yourselves ...Qur'an 42:1 1 And Allah has given you mates of your own nature, and has given you from your mates, children and grandchildren, and has made provision of good things for you. Is it then in vanity that they believe and in the grace of God that they disbelieve? Qur'an 16:72 The rest of this paper outlines the position of Islam regarding the status of woman in society from its various aspects - spiritually, socially, economically and politically. 1. The Spiritual Aspect The Qur'an provides clear-cut evidence that woman iscompletely equated with man in the sight of God interms of her rights and responsibilities. The Qur'an states: "Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds" (Qur'an 74:38). It also states: ...So their Lord accepted their prayers, (saying): I will not suffer to be lost the work of any of you whether male or female. You proceed one from another ...(Qur'an 3: 195). Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily to him will We give a new life that is good and pure, and We will bestow on such their reward according to the their actions. (Qur'an 16:97, see also 4:124). Woman according to the Qur'an is not blamed for Adam's first mistake. Both were jointly wrong in their disobedience to God, both repented, and both were forgiven. (Qur'an 2:36, 7:20 - 24). In one verse in fact (20:121), Adam specifically, was blamed. In terms of religious obligations, such as the Daily Prayers, Fasting, Poor-due, and Pilgrimage, woman is no different from man. In some cases indeed, woman has certain advantages over man. For example, the woman is exempted from the daily prayers and from fasting during her menstrual periods and forty days after childbirth. She is also exempted from fasting during her pregnancy and when she is nursing her baby if there is any threat to her health or her baby's. If the missed fasting is obligatory (during the month of Ramadan), she can make up for the missed days whenever she can. She does not have to make up for the prayers missed for any of the above reasons. Although women can and did go into the mosque during the days of the prophet and thereafter attendance et the Friday congregational prayers is optional for them while it is mandatory for men (on Friday). This is clearly a tender touch of the Islamic teachings for they are considerate of the fact that a woman may be nursing her baby or caring for him, and thus may be unable to go out to the mosque at the time of the prayers. They also take into account the physiological and psychological changes associated with her natural female functions. 2. The Social Aspect a) As a child and an adolescent Despite the social acceptance of female infanticide among some Arabian tribes, the Qur'an forbade this custom, and considered it a crime like any other murder. "And when the female (infant) buried alive - is questioned, for what crime she was killed." (Qur'an 81:8-9). Criticizing the attitudes of such parents who reject their female children, the Qur'an states: When news is brought to one of them, of (the Birth of) a female (child), his face darkens and he is filled with inward grief! With shame does he hide himself from his people because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain her on (sufferance) and contempt, or bury her in the dust? Ah! What an evil (choice) they decide on? (Qur'an 16: 58-59). Far from saving the girl's life so that she may later suffer injustice and inequality, Islam requires kind and just treatment for her. Among the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (P.) in this regard are the following: Whosoever has a daughter and he does not bury her alive, does not insult her, and does not favor his son over her, God will enter him into Paradise. (Ibn Hanbal, No. 1957). Whosoever supports two daughters till they mature, he and I will come in the day of judgment as this (and he pointed with his two fingers held together). A similar Hadeeth deals in like manner with one who supports two sisters. (Ibn-Hanbal, No. 2104). The right of females to seek knowledge is not different from that of males. Prophet Muhammad (P.) said: "Seeking knowledge is mandatory for every Muslim". (AlBayhaqi). Muslim as used here including both males and females. b) As a wife: The Qur'an clearly indicates that marriage is sharing between the two halves of the society, and that its objectives, beside perpetuating human life, are emotional well-being and spiritual harmony. Its bases are love and mercy. Among the most impressive verses in the Qur'an about marriage is the following. "And among His signs is this: That He created mates for you from yourselves that you may find rest, peace of mind in them, and He ordained between you love and mercy. Lo, herein indeed are signs for people who reflect." (Qur'an 30:2 1). According to Islamic Law, women cannot be forced to marry anyone without their consent. Ibn Abbas reported that a girl came to the Messenger of God, Muhammad (P.), and she reported that her father had forced her to marry without her consent. The Messenger of God gave her the choice . . . (between accepting the marriage or invalidating it). (Ibn Hanbal No. 2469). In another version, the girl said: "Actually I accept this marriage but I wanted to let women know that parents have no right (to force a husband on them)" (Ibn Maja, No. 1873). Besides all other provisions for her protection at the time of marriage, it was specifically decreed that woman has the full right to her Mahr, a marriage gift, which is presented to her by her husband and is included in the nuptial contract, and that such ownership does not transfer to her father or husband. The concept of Mahr in Islam is neither an actual or symbolic price for the woman, as was the case in certain cultures, but rather it is a gift symbolizing love and affection. The rules for married life in Islam are clear and in harmony with upright human nature. In consideration of the physiological and psychological make-up of man and woman, both have equal rights and claims on one another, except for one responsibility, that of leadership. This is a matter which is natural in any collective life and which is consistent with the nature of man. The Qur'an thus states: "And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them, and men are a degree above them." (Qur'an 2:228). Such degree is Quiwama (maintenance and protection). This refers to that natural difference between the sexes which entitles the weaker sex to protection. It implies no superiority or advantage before the law. Yet, man's role of leadership in relation to his family does not mean the husband's dictatorship over his wife. Islam emphasizes the importance of taking counsel and mutual agreement in family decisions. The Qur'an gives us an example: "...If they (husband wife) desire to wean the child by mutual consent and (after) consultation, there is no blame on them..." (Qur'an 2: 233). Over and above her basic rights as a wife comes the right which is emphasized by the Qur'an and is strongly recommended by the Prophet (P); kind treatment and companionship. The Qur'an states: "...But consort with them in kindness, for if you hate them it may happen that you hate a thing wherein God has placed much good." (Qur'an 4: l9). Prophet Muhammad. (P) said: The best of you is the best to his family and I am the best among you to my family. The most perfect believers are the best in conduct and best of you are those who are best to their wives. (Ibn-Hanbal, No. 7396) Behold, many women came to Muhammad's wives complaining against their husbands (because they beat them) - - those (husbands) are not the best of you. As the woman's right to decide about her marriage is recognized, so also her right to seek an end for an unsuccessful marriage is recognized. To provide for the stability of the family, however, and in order to protect it from hasty decisions under temporary emotional stress, certain steps and waiting periods should be observed by men and women seeking divorce. Considering the relatively more emotional nature of women, a good reason for asking for divorce should be brought before the judge. Like the man, however, the woman can divorce her husband with out resorting to the court, if the nuptial contract allows that. More specifically, some aspects of Islamic Law concerning marriage and divorce are interesting and are worthy of separate treatment. When the continuation of the marriage relationship is impossible for any reason, men are still taught to seek a gracious end for it. The Qur'an states about such cases: When you divorce women, and they reach their prescribed term, then retain them in kindness and retain them not for injury so that you transgress (the limits). (Qur'an 2:231). (See also Qur'an 2:229 and 33:49). c) As a mother: Islam considered kindness to parents next to the worship of God. "And we have enjoined upon man (to be good) to his parents: His mother bears him in weakness upon weakness..." (Qur'an 31:14) (See also Qur'an 46:15, 29:8). Moreover, the Qur'an has a special recommendation for the good treatment of mothers: "Your Lord has decreed that you worship none save Him, and that you be kind to your parents. . ." (Qur'an 17:23). A man came to Prophet Muhammad (P) asking: O Messenger of God, who among the people is the most worthy of my good company? The Prophet (P) said, Your mother. The man said then who else: The Prophet (P) said, Your mother. The man asked, Then who else? Only then did the Prophet (P) say, Your father. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim). A famous saying of The Prophet is "Paradise is at the feet of mothers." (In Al'Nisa'I, Ibn Majah, Ahmad). "It is the generous (in character) who is good to women, and it is the wicked who insults them." 3. The Economic Aspect Islam decreed a right of which woman was deprived both before Islam and after it (even as late as this century), the right of independent ownership. According to Islamic Law, woman's right to her money, real estate, or other properties is fully acknowledged. This right undergoes no change whether she is single or married. She retains her full rights to buy, sell, mortgage or lease any or all her properties. It is nowhere suggested in the Law that a woman is a minor simply because she is a female. It is also noteworthy that such right applies to her properties before marriage as well as to whatever she acquires thereafter. With regard to the woman's right to seek employment it should be stated first that Islam regards her role in society as a mother and a wife as the most sacred and essential one. Neither maids nor baby-sitters can possibly take the mother's place as the educator of an upright, complex free, and carefully-reared children. Such a noble and vital role, which largely shapes the future of nations, cannot be regarded as "idleness". However, there is no decree in Islam which forbids woman from seeking employment whenever there is a necessity for it, especially in positions which fit her nature and in which society needs her most. Examples of these professions are nursing, teaching (especially for children), and medicine. Moreover, there is no restriction on benefiting from woman's exceptional talent in any field. Even for the position of a judge, where there may be a tendency to doubt the woman's fitness for the post due to her more emotional nature, we find early Muslim scholars such as Abu-Hanifa and Al-Tabary holding there is nothing wrong with it. In addition, Islam restored to woman the right of inheritance, after she herself was an object of inheritance in some cultures. Her share is completely hers and no one can make any claim on it, including her father and her husband. "Unto men (of the family) belongs a share of that which Parents and near kindred leave, and unto women a share of that which parents and near kindred leave, whether it be a little or much - a determinate share." ((Qur'an 4:7). Her share in most cases is one-half the man's share, with no implication that she is worth half a man! It would seem grossly inconsistent after the overwhelming evidence of woman's equitable treatment in Islam, which was discussed in the preceding pages, to make such an inference. This variation in inheritance rights is only consistent with the variations in financial responsibilities of man and woman according to the Islamic Law. Man in Islam is fully responsible for the maintenance of his wife, his children, and in some cases of his needy relatives, especially the females. This responsibility is neither waived nor reduced because of his wife's wealth or because of her access to any personal income gained from work, rent, profit, or any other legal means. Woman, on the other hand, is far more secure financially and is far less burdened with any claims on her possessions. Her possessions before marriage do not transfer to her husband and she even keeps her maiden name. She has no obligation to spend on her family out of such properties or out of her income after marriage. She is entitled to the "Mahr" which she takes from her husband at the time of marriage. If she is divorced, she may get an alimony from her ex-husband. An examination of the inheritance law within the overall framework of the Islamic Law reveals not only justice but also an abundance of compassion for woman. 4. The Political Aspect Any fair investigation of the teachings of Islam o~ into the history of the Islamic civilization will surely find a clear evidence of woman's equality with man in what we call today "political rights". This includes the right of election as well as the nomination to political offices. It also includes woman's right to participate in public affairs. Both in the Qur'an and in Islamic history we find examples of women who participated in serious discussions and argued even with the Prophet (P) himself, (see Qur'an 58: 14 and 60: 10-12). During the Caliphate of Omar Ibn al-Khattab, a woman argued with him in the mosque, proved her point, and caused him to declare in the presence of people: "A woman is right and Omar is wrong." Although not mentioned in the Qur'an, one Hadeeth of the Prophet is interpreted to make woman ineligible for the position of head of state. The Hadeeth referred to is roughly translated: "A people will not prosper if they let a woman be their leader." This limitation, however, has nothing to do with the dignity of woman or with her rights. It is rather, related to the natural differences in the biological and psychological make-up of men and women. According to Islam, the head of the state is no mere figurehead. He leads people in the prayers, especially on Fridays and festivities; he is continuously engaged in the process of decision-making pertaining to the security and well-being of his people. This demanding position, or any similar one, such as the Commander of the Army, is generally inconsistent with the physiological and psychological make-up of woman in general. It is a medical fact that during their monthly periods and during their pregnancies, women undergo various physiological and psychological changes. Such changes may occur during an emergency situation, thus affecting her decision, without considering the excessive strain which is produced. Moreover, some decisions require a maximum of rationality and a minimum of emotionality - a requirement which does not coincide with the instinctive nature of women. Even in modern times, and in the most developed countries, it is rare to find a woman in the position of a head of state acting as more than a figurehead, a woman commander of the armed services, or even a proportionate number of women representatives in parliaments, or similar bodies. One can not possibly ascribe this to backwardness of various nations or to any constitutional limitation on woman's right to be in such a position as a head of state or as a member of the parliament. It is more logical to explain the present situation in terms of the natural and indisputable differences between man and woman, a difference which does not imply any "supremacy" of one over the other. The difference implies rather the "complementary" roles of both the sexes in life. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. CONCLUSION The first part of this paper deals briefly with the position of various religions and cultures on the issue under investigation. Part of this exposition extends to cover the general trend as late as the nineteenth century, nearly 1300 years after the Qur'an set forth the Islamic teachings. In the second part of the paper, the status of women in Islam is briefly discussed. Emphasis in this part is placed on the original and authentic sources of Islam. This represents the standard according to which degree of adherence of Muslims can be judged. It is also a fact that during the downward cycle of Islamic Civilization, such teachings were not strictly adhered to by many people who profess to be Muslims. Such deviations were unfairly exaggerated by some writers, and the worst of this, were superficially taken to represent the teachings of "Islam" to the Western reader without taking the trouble to make any original and unbiased study of the authentic sources of these teachings. Even with such deviations three facts are worth mentioning: 1. The history of Muslims is rich with women of great achievements in all walks of life from as early as the seventh century (B.C.) 2. It is impossible for anyone to justify any mistreatment of woman by any decree of rule embodied in the Islamic Law, nor could anyone dare to cancel, reduce, or distort the clear-cut legal rights of women given in Islamic Law. 3. Throughout history, the reputation, chastity and maternal role of Muslim women were objects of admiration by impartial observers. It is also worthwhile to state that the status which women reached during the present era was not achieved due to the kindness of men or due to natural progress. It was rather achieved through a long struggle and sacrifice on woman's part and only when society needed her contribution and work, more especial!; during the two world wars, and due to the escalation of technological change. In the case of Islam such compassionate and dignified status was decreed, not because it reflects the environment of the seventh century, nor under the threat or pressure of women and their organizations, but rather because of its intrinsic truthfulness. If this indicates anything, it would demonstrate the divine origin of the Qur'an and the truthfulness of the message of Islam, which, unlike human philosophies and ideologies, was far from proceeding from its human environment, a message which established such humane principles as neither grew obsolete during the course of time and after these many centuries, nor can become obsolete in the future. After all, this is the message of the All-Wise and all-knowing God whose wisdom and knowledge are far beyond the ultimate in human thought and progress.
Did you read this??? Texas hospital being overrun by illegals!! And this is ONLY one state in the U.S.!!? Sept. 24, 2006, 1:14PM 'Border baby' boom strains S.
Should I say something about this to my fiance? During Memorial Day I invited my family and my fiance mother to a dinner my fiance and I prepared. While I was struggling to watch Rocky I caught a part of conversation my parents and her mother were having about me. Her mother said I was weak, while she, my brother, mother and her daughter were strong. I think there was a point and I don't think she was trying to insult me and I only heard part of the conversation. Later that night my mother called me and told me I was not a weak person. Yesterday, I spoke with my father and he said he didn't appreciate what she called me. I thought we got along and I'm a quiet Atype personality so is this something I should let slide since it's been over a month ago and it didn't bother me until now? Or, should I bring this up again for clarification as to what was meant about me being weak? This is somewhat important since she will be living with my fiance and I when we move due to her health issues. I'm ok with it (since we are buying a duplex)
40,000 Iraqi's coming to America? I don't understand it. I mean...I read something a little while ago that said the government can't pay for individual memorial services for the fallen soldiers....but now they can pay for 40,000 Iraqi's to come to this country...give them free health care and jobs and stuff like that, when Americans can't really afford a decent health care system...Plus they are trying to stop illegal immigration, and they are bringing them here...does anyone else see somethign wrong with this?
Japanese POW rememrance? Do you know of our brave allied prisoners? Today in George Square, Glasgow there will be a remembrance walk to commemorate for the first time the acknowledgement that while Britain celebrated Japan's surrender the POW's, regimental and civilian, were still suffering at the hands of the Japanese army. The FEPOWs (Far East Prisoners of War) endured 3 ½ years of the most horrific mental and physical treatment, including starvation, diseases, over-work, beatings, torture etc. Those lucky enough to return home continued to suffer in silence with ongoing nightmares and bad health, yet they endeavored to try and live normal lives, never complaining or asking for anything. They have never been fully recognized for all the mental and physical torment they went through, and we would like to see that they are permanently honored with a memorial day in their name. Please post their name, rank and regiment in memoriam. I would like to honour my great uncle who was prisoner in Kinkaseki and forced to work down the copper mines. MACKIE R. GNR. 155TH FIELD REG’T. R.A. (KI) (T6) To add a loved ones name to the roll of honour please visit www.powtaiwan.org Thanks Molly There were so many good men lost during this war and many who lived after and are still living the nightmare everyday. God bless them all and the freedom they gave us. Did you know that in 1962 on an island off Japan holidaymakers came across four Japanese soldiers who immediately surrendered not knowing the war had finished 16 years earlier. Thanks Bronwen Sorry about the private message thing but there a some extremely offensive people who take advantage of the ability to IM so I no longer allow it. Angella F Although I get where you are coming from I doubt very much that the European statement was meant in a derogatory way. My post is to hightlight the suffering off all our Allied POW's. It is not a contest to see who suffered more. Rover thanks Many thanks to all out Allied troops without whom our world may have been drastically changed.
i got this in the mail the other day..would like to know how people feel about this? UNBELIEVABLE!!! Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas , Texas is a fairly famous institution and for a variety of reasons: 1. John F. Kennedy died there in 1963 2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after 3. Jack Ruby-who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died there a few years later..by coincidence "On the flip side, Parkland is also home to the second busiest maternity ward in the country with almost 16,000 new babies arriving each year. (That's almost 44 per day---every day) A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants. That's 11,200 anchor babies born every year just in Dallas According to the article, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies in 2004 but managed to end up with almost $8 million dollars in surplus funding. Medicaid kicked in $34.5 million, Dallas County taxpayers kicked in $31.3 million and the feds tossed in another $9.5 million. The average patient in Parkland 's maternity wards is 25 years old, married and giving birth to her second child. She is also an illegal immigrant. By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on their immigration status or ability to pay. OK, fine. That doesn't mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital , they do. " Parkland Memorial Hospital has nine prenatal clinics. NINE. The Dallas Morning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child---her previous two were also born at Parkland . Her first two deliveries were free and the Mexican native was grateful because it would have cost $200 to have them in Mexico . This time, the hospital wants her to pay $10 per visit and $100 for the delivery but she was unsure if she could come up with the money. No t that it matters, the hospital won't turn her away. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.) "How long has this been going on? "My husband is a pilot for the United States Navy (yes, he fought in Iraq ) and while the health care is good, we Navy wives don't get any of these perks! Car seats? Diapers? Not so much. So my question is this: Does our public medical care system treat illegal immigrants better than American citizens? Yes it does! As I mentioned, the care I have received is perfectly adequate but it's bare bones, meat and potato medical care---not top of line. Their (the illegals) medical care is free---simply because they are illegal immigrants? Once again, there is no way to verify their income. Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County residents who earn less than $40,000 per year. (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job. Yeah, the 'free' care is not so easy for Americans.) There are about 140 pat i ents who received roughly $4 million dollars for un-reimbursed medical care. Additionally, medical students a t the University of Texas Southwestern for which Parkland Hospital is the training facility will now have a Spanish language requirement added to their already jammed-packed curriculum.. No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multicultural) requirement. In the meantime, I have to end my column here. I have to go buy a car seat." ( Sorry for the length, but this needs wide circulation----particularly to our "employees" in Congress.) If you want to verify accuracy: http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/parkland.asp
i need your help please thanks? can you please summarize this information into a paragraph? Dr. Livingstone was a Christian missionary, physician, explorer and emancipationist. Walking from the west coast to the east coast of central Africa, his exploits included incredible drama and have been documented in a plethora of literature. Often loathed by whites, he was admired by Africans, and his hatred of the slave trade was intense. David Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Scotland on March 19, 1813. He began earning a living at an early age and taught himself Latin and English and other subjects while working in a tweed factory from 6 am to 8 pm 6 days a week. He obtained a degree in medicine, nearly failing the medical exam, because he believed in using a stethoscope, contrary to his examiners’ opinion. His religious faith drew him to a career as a missionary, training at the London Missionary Society. When he stood up to preach his first sermon, he was so frightened that after he read the title, he bolted out of the church. Encouraged by friend, Robert Moffat, his first trip to South Africa began in December of 1840. The Moffats had even greater influence, in 1844 he married Robert Moffats’ daughter, Mary. Although popular among African natives, he made enemies of some of the white settlers because he learned African languages and had an unusually keen understanding and sympathy for the native cultures. In 1843, while settling the Mabotsa valley, Livingstone shot a lion, but before it died, it managed to bite and tear up his left arm, leaving it nearly useless. He used live maggots on the open wound to eat the dead flesh. Dr. Livingstone fought malaria constantly resulting in him being the first known person to use the thermometer to measure body temperature. He discovered the use of Canaan in the treatment of malaria, (but mixing it with jalap as he found that Quinine was the most constipating of drugs)- thus the Livingstone "rouser" saved many lives. Livingstone’s travels in Africa made him the first white man to see Victoria Falls, and also an esteemed visitor among the natives. According to one biographer, "the great Scotsman" added approximately one million square miles to the known portion of the globe. He received a gold medal from the London Royal Geographical Society for being the first to cross the entire African continent from west to east. He crossed the Kalahari desert reaching Lake Ngami in 1849. He discovered the Zambezi River in 1851, and eventually followed it to Victoria Falls in 1855. His Missionary Travels in South Africa (1857) is an account of that journey. He was given command of an expedition to explore the Zambezi region(1857-1863). He returned to England in 1864 and with his brother, Charles, wrote The Zambezi and It’s Tributaries (1865). In 1866, he returned to Africa to seek the source of the Nile. Remembered as an explorer, Dr. Livingstone is still more distinguished for his humanity. At the same time that slavery was taken for granted, he condemned the slave trade, and alerted his countrymen of the abhorrent practice. He hoped to abolish the slave trade by opening Africa to Christian commerce and missionary stations. While he was in "darkest" Africa, at home and in America he was feared lost or possibly dead due to lack of any communication. Sir Gordon Bennet of the New York Herald sent Henry Morton Stanley, a staff reporter, to look for the explorer and gain the "scoop" of the century. It took over a year for Stanley to find Dr. Livingstone, finding him in 1871 in the small village of Ujiji. Here, the famous phrase "Doctor Livingstone I presume" was asked by Mr. Stanley. Livingstone had suffered serious health problems, and when Stanley found him he was at one of the lowest points of his life, yet he refused to turn back, maintaining his desire to find the source of the Nile. Stanley joined him on a journey to the north end of Lake Tanganyika in 1872.. Livingstone’s health continued to worsen in the months before his death in May of 1873. His crew had gone to get supplies, and came back to find him in a kneeling position, apparently praying when he died. His death resulted in the longest funeral march in world history. His loyal followers carried his remains 1500 miles to the coast, taking five months for the journey, believing that he would want to be buried in England. ( His heart was buried in Zambia beneath a tree, where there is a memorial to this great Scotsman) Ten men died on the journey before surrendering his remains to the British Consulate at a place, Bagamoio, which literally means "lay down the burden of your heart." His body was buried at Westminster Abbey. His last journals were edited by Horace Waller in 1874. Livingstone died a pauper, yet he left a huge legacy. There is hardly a country in Southern and Central Africa where his name is not upheld. Buildings and streets bare his name, and statues of him stand tall, including one next to the president’s office
